Modi writes history from Siachen to Srinagar
10/24/2014 11:26:46 PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled his com
mitment on visiting the Kashmir valley during
the occasion of Diwali festival on Thursday. He simply wanted to spend the festival of lights with people in Srinagar who had faced death and devastation during the recent floods. But despite the fact that Modi,as Prime Minister of India, wrote history by being the first head of the Indian Government who spent time with people affected by floods in Kashmir. Not only this. He became the first Indian Prime Minister who spent the light of festival with soldiers on the 19000-ft high Siachen mountain glacier in Ladakh. It was a novel way of celebrating Diwali. And Modi did so by sharing experiences with soldiers on the icy heights of Siachen glacier and from there he interacted with people in Kashmir who had suffered severe losses owing to floods. In fact the main purpose of his visit was to share grief and sorrow with people hit by floods but this gesture too was politicized. Some questioned the timing of the visit on the plea that he should have visited the Valley during Eid celebrations. Why on Diwali and why not on Eid ? This question was being posed by a number of political leaders, including separatists.Others said that when Modi did not greet people on the occasion of Eid how was it that he had come to celebrate Diwali with people ? Right or wrong in their campaign against Modi the flood affected people have been benefitted by Modi who has announced a liberal financial assistance to the tune of Rs.570 crores for rebuilding damaged houses,Rs.175 crores for rebuilding and renovating six major hospitals and assistance for providing books and note books to students who had lost them in the floods. And the Centre is to increase financial assistance once the report on the losses was complete.
Occasion or no occasion Kashmiri separatists seem to have emerged as experienced politicians for calling for shutdown nd general hartal whenever any Indian leaders visits Kashmir. It is in tune with the established practice that Kashmiri separatists had given a call for shutdown in protest against Modi's visit to the Valley. However, the call for strike. The strike given by the separatist groups against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday had evoked a partial response in the Valley. Although most shops in and around the city centre of Lal Chowk - the commercial hub of the summer capital - were closed, establishments had opened for business in other districts of Kashmir. But owing to floods majority of shops in Lal Chowk and its adjoining areas have witnessed enormous damage forcing the shopkeepers to keep their business establishments closed. And the separatists felt elated when they found shops closed in Lal Chowk areas when these shops had not opened for the last over one month..Public transport was sparse, private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws plied normally.Educational institutions, government offices and banks were closed on account of the holiday for Diwali.
The two factions of Hurriyat Conference had called for a general strike and peaceful protests against the visit of the Prime Minister to the Valley. What is most unfortunate is the way some separatist leaders spread canards about Central Government's mute response to the flood disasters. And Syed Ali Shah Geelani is seen in the forefront of those responsible for spreading canards against the Government of India. He has said that the "Government of India acted as a mute spectator amidst the worst-ever floods in Kashmir and did nothing to mitigate the sufferings of the affected (people)... We will not allow anyone to rub salt into our wounds."Geelani also stated that when Modi had not felicitated Muslims on Eid, his celebrating Diwali in the Muslim-majority state was "unacceptable". The Shabir Ahmad Shah-led Hurriyat faction, too, had called for a general strike and asked people to hold peaceful demonstrations against the prime minister's visit. As was expected the Congress workers and leaders too staged protest demonstrations in Srinagar against Modi's visit. Some Congress supporters have gone to the extent of blaming the Government of India for not sending boats for carrying out rescue operations in flooded areas when the boats, more than 50, that were seen evacuating people from the inundated vicinities had been sent by the central Government agencies..The Army, Air Force, the Navy and the National Disaster Response Force had played a vital role in rescuing thousands of people from the flooded areas and in distributing several lakh packets of food items and drinking water bottles. It was under the Modi's regime that the Centre sanctioned Rs.21000 crores weeks before the state Government submitted any report on loss assessment.
Instead of helping Modi to understand the actual problem and the real dimensions of the sufferings of people owing to floods the shutdown seems to have widened the communication gap between Modi and people in Kashmir. There is anger in Andhra, Odisha, Assam where the Centre did not announced immediate financial assistance for flood affected people. Flood affected people in these states blame the centre for adopting pro-Kashmir stance while sanctioning relief, rehabilitation and rescue package.
