Major infiltration bid foiled at Poonch, militants pushed back | Pak again violates ceasefire, resorts to heavy shelling, firing on LoC | | MS Nazki MENDHAR, Oct 24: A major infiltration bid was tonight foiled in Balakote sub-sector of Mendhar, Poonch, with the troops pushing a heavily-armed group of 10-12 militants back into the Pak territory. The intrusion bid was made amid ceasefire violation by the enemy. Under the cover of small arms fire, Pak tried to infiltrate militants from the Panjani nullah area of Balakote on the LoC at about 8.30 pm. The enemy troops also targeted Indian posts in Kunikar Bunker and M S Tekri, according to official sources. The fire had come from the Pak Topa and Gidrian posts. While the enemy troops fired at Indian posts, they tried to push into the Indian territory a group of 10 to 12 militants. The attempt was, however, detected by the border troops who then fired in the direction of the infiltrating militants, sources said. As the exchange of fire between the two sides ensued, the militants fled back into the Pak territory, the sources added. Sources said during the intermittent exchange of fire, Pak resorted to heavy shelling, targeting forward Indian posts and villages. India retaliated effectively, the sources added. The shelling was continuing in the area when reports last came in. Sources said Pak was desperate to infiltrate militants into the Indian territory ahead of the assembly polls to foment trouble in the state. It was also desperate to push militants into the state before the mountain passes were covered with snow, the sources added. |
