Modi's critics in Kashmir prove wrong as PM initiates flood relief measures | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 25: Prophets of doom proved wrong. Even the anti-establishment soothsayers did not prove right. Both of them floundered because whatever campaign they had launched against Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's latest visit to Srinagar, lost teeth the moment Modi announced a hefty package for the flood affected people in Kashmir. In Srinagar vested interests posed a question. Why did not Modi visit Kashmir during the Eid celebrations? Why did he choose to visit the Valley during the Diwali celebrations? Another question. Why Modi did not greet people in Kashmir during Eid celebrations? People in Kashmir were actually mourning over their losses. They were shedding tears over those who were killed in floods they were weeping over the massive devastation caused to their property, residential houses, crops and orchards. Was it right for Modi to convey Eid greeting to people in Kashmir who were faced by an uncertain future because of the devastation caused by floods and landslides? Certainly not. By the time Eid was being celebrated the Government of India had not received any report or memorandum from the State Government on the assessment of losses so that the Centre could announce the package. Hence Modi found his visiting Kashmir during Eid celebrations not appropriate for announcing some package. And Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, is right when he said that had Modi visited Srinagar during Eid celebrations the separatists' would have given a call for shutdown which could prevent people from offering prayers in mosques. Once it happened there could have been a hue and cry against Modi's visit to Kashmir. And Modi did not fall in the trap of separatists. Days before the Diwali festival the State Government had submitted a memorandum listing a loss assessment to the tune of Rs. 44,000 crores. Despite the fact that the Central Government, which has sent two teams to Jammu and Kashmir, had not accepted the state's preliminary report on the loss assessment it had got some idea about the losses which had made the task easier for Modi to announce some package. And he did announce financial assistance to those whose houses needed to be rebuilt or repaired or renovated. He announced a package of Rs. 175 crores for repairing or rebuilding six major hospitals. Back in New Delhi he initiated measures which should silence his critics in Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday directed the officers concerned of the Central Government to examine quickly with due sensitivity the memorandum by the Jammu and Kashmir Government for a special financial package for the flood victims in the state. "The Prime Minister has directed the officers concerned of the Central Government that as soon as the detailed assessment (of the losses) of the State Government is completed, they should examine the memorandum quickly with due sensitivity," an official spokesman said after the conclusion of Modi's visit here. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had yesterday expressed the hope that Prime Minister would accept the State Government's demand for a Rs 44,000-crore package for relief to the flood-hit people. The Prime Minister also directed that all necessary steps be taken for providing relief to the affected people and for restoration of normal life. "He particularly emphasised on the need for providing immediate relief to the people residing in tents and temporary shelters, revival of economic activity in the state and addressing sustainable livelihood issues," the spokesman said. This is besides the amount of Rs. 21000 crores Modi had sanctioned within a couple of days the Valley had been swet by floods. And those in Valley who had posed some question on the timing of Modi's visit need to take note of question raised by people in the Jammu region. People and political leaders in Jammu region, who have been blaming the Centre for anti-Jammu bias in distribution of relief and restoration of damaged infrastructure, have posed a question. If Modi has visited Srinagar why did he not visit Jammu on Thursday? Will this question be answered by the separatists in Kashmir? |
