JAMMU, Oct 25: For his comments that Sham Lal Sharma is all set to join BJP and has also worked out the modalities in this regard, the Congress leader today hit back at NC MLC Devinder Singh Rana and said "his mentality is influenced by his family environment.”
Though he did not elaborate on it further, what Sham probably meant by the "family environment" was that his elder brother Jitendra Singh was a BJP leader and Union Minister while he himself was a NC man. Sham and his elder brother, ex-MP Madan Lal Sharma are both Congress leaders. In the Rana family, while Jitendra pursues BJP ideology, Devinder is known for pushing the NC policies in Jammu region. This is what Sham perhaps meant by "family environment". Devinder did not have any political background when he was made MLC by NC. He continues to enjoy the "blessings" of father-son duo of Farooq Abdullah and his Chief Minister son Omar. Before he became MLC, he had been publicly claiming that he had no plans to join active politics.
Speaking exclusively to Early Times, Sham did not question Devinder's right to make a personal attack on him but said he was not surprised at all by his utterances.
"Uske parivaar ka mahol jaisa hai, vaisi hi uski mansikta hai (His mentality, the characteristic way of thinking are influenced by his family environment)," he said without further elaborating on it.
Sham tendered his resignation on Friday from the State Cabinet. He held the portfolio of Flood Control Minister. He had submitted his resignation to PCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz as the Chief Minister was out of station.
He alleged that he was forced to step down as his proposal to frame a policy for regularisation of daily wagers was sabotaged by a few NC Ministers, saying he would identify them at an appropriate time. "A meeting was yesterday called in the Civil Secretariat to formulate a policy for regularisation of daily wagers but two to three NC Ministers objected to my move and fought with me. They wanted their workers to be regularised first which I refused," he said.
Devinder had reacted sharply to Sham's statement that some NC Ministers had sabotaged his move to regularise daily wagers. "Sham is all set to embrace BJP and has finalised the modalities with them. When AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi visited the flood-hit J&K areas last month, Sham, despite being a Flood Control Minister, did not accompany them. He did so to appease BJP leaders and give them a signal that he is ready to join them," Devinder yesterday told a section of the press.
"It is untrue. The tour of Sonia and Rahul was exclusively managed by me both in Jammu as well as in Srinagar. I don't have to get a certificate from Devinder in this regard. I am a Congressman and will continue to be a Congressman," Sham said, brushing aside the rumours of his joining BJP.
"But I would continue to plead the case of Jammu region come what may. No one can stop me from doing so," he asserted.
He said the interest of Jammu was supreme for him.
