Sham Lal Sharma's resignation, last shock to NC-Congress rule in J&K | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 25: The resignation by senior Congress leader and PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma has come as the final blow to the NC-Congress alliance in the State which is otherwise also coming to an end with the announcement of State Assembly elections by the Election Commission of India in New Delhi. The six-year term of the J&K Assembly ends on January 19. Under the constitution the new State Assembly must be constituted after the elections before the term of the present Assembly ends. The parting of ways between the NC and the Congress has happened much before Sharma's resignation. The two parties are not only fighting the Assembly elections separately but more essentially they are now fighting the elections against each other. In this background the resignation of Sham Lal Sharma only proves how estranged the two parties are with each other. Since both are finding the ground slip under their feet, they have decided to fight each other in addition to their traditional political rivals in the BJP and the PDP. How far the resignation would by Sharma impact the future relationship of the two parties does not need any debate since collectively or individually both are in deep trouble politically. The BJP has because of the personal charisma of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi done well during the Lok Sabha elections in the Jammu region and it is generally believed the losers of the resultant effect by BJP victory in the Jammu region and Ladakh region and the PDP in the Valley would also impact the Assembly results. It would have been politically right to have withdrawn from the coalition Government after the electoral alliance was broken by the NC and the Congress. Ruling the state in a lame duck situation has caused huge damage to the interests of the both the parties and it would have stood both in good stead had they parted ways completely after breaking the electoral alliance. Politics always makes strange bedfellows and today's enemies can be tomorrow's friends. Notwithstanding this idiom, the fact is that J&K has not witnessed a stranger ruling alliance other the NC-Congress continuing their ruling alliance after breaking political equations between them. How would this be taken by the voters in the State would only be known once the State Assembly elections are held and the result become known, but Sham Lal Sharma's decision is resign on whatever reason is definitely the last shock the ruling alliance has taken in J&K. |
