J&K Assembly polls: Babu Singh starts campaigning as Cong candidate, may or may not get mandate | | | Sanjay Pathak
KATHUA, Oct 25: At a time when the party is yet to announce the name of its candidate from Kathua assembly segment, former minister Babu Singh alias Jatinder Singh has started campaigning as a Congress candidate from here. This has led to confusion in the Congress circles here. There are nearly a dozen strong claimants of the Congress mandate from Kathua assembly constituency and the party is yet to shortlist the candidates. "There is no official announcement of the party candidates for Kathua district, so it is improper on the part of any one who is claiming to be the party candidate at this point of time", Pankaj Dogra, working president of the District Congress Committee (DCC), Kathua, said and added that party was yet to start process for forming panels of potential candidates. "Being district president of the party, I can say with authority that no official announcement regarding candidate for Kathua seat has been made so far", he said. Interestingly, Babu Singh is yet to formally join Congress party but he has started campaign as party candidate. In 2008 assembly elections, Babu Singh had contested as rival candidate against official Congress candidate Choudhary Lal Singh from Kathua segment. Insiders in the Congress said that in the faction-ridden party, a group has promised Babu Singh that he would be given mandate and on this promise, he had started campaign. He has also opened his election office at Kathua. Due to this action of Babu Singh, there is complete chaos and confusion among Congress workers especially among supporters of those leaders who are staking their claims on the Kathua seat. |
