Pvt Schools fleece people in Srinagar | Charge fee for September when schools were closed | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 25 : Parents of students studying in various private schools across Srinagar are up in arms against the school managements as they are demanding payment of schoolfee for the month of September when all these schools were closed due to floods. The school managements are also demanding payment of bus fees as well from the parents. "When the BSNL decides that its subscribers should not be billed for the September month, why cannot the private schools or even colleges in Kashmir do the same? Educational institutions especially the schools have not at all been able to provide the services to the student community. It is wrong ethically, morally as well as legally that parents of the students be asked to deposit the fees for the month of September when the whole Kashmir valley was engulfed under the devastating floods" said Dr Mushtaq Ahmad Khan Executive Director Kashmir Centre for Community Development (KCCD) a Srinagar based NGO while talking to Early Times. Pertinent to mention here that majority of private schools Srinagar were submerged in the flood waters which resulted in damages to the school infrastructure. There are some schools in Srinagar which are yet to reopen from the day they got submerged in the waters. The destruction is massive, but at the same time students who are enrolled in these schools have also suffered in one way or the other. The parents cannot afford to pay the fees of their wards when they themselves were submerged in the flood waters or their business establishments suffered massive destruction. "We understand that schools have to provide salaries to its staff members, but why cannot the school managements give some rebate in the school fees which would lower the financial burden of the parents ? " questions Fozia Bhat whose two children are studying in a prominent private school of Srinagar. "On the other hand there are many private schools in Srinagar, Baramulla , Budgam and other districts of Kashmir which remained unaffected during the floods. These schools must not at all charge any fee from students for the month of September," Fozia added "Asking parents to pay fees for the month of September is completely unfair and the government should intervene into it. Since judiciary has played a positive role in making it obligatory on insurance companies to compensate the loss of victims. On the same lines it should impress upon the schools especially those who were unaffected by floods to lessen the amount of fee they charge normally" said Shahnawaz Mir PDP Youth leader. It is a matter of concern that some prominent schools in Srinagar have started to functioning in-spite of the fact that such schools are not at all fit to resume the normal classwork. It has been witnessed that large amount of filth , silt and muck is still scattered in and around the school campuses. The school play grounds , corridors , class rooms smell obnoxiously. It is not because the schoolmanagements are concerned towards the career of the students , but they want to ensure that they should not suffer. Just to extract fees from students some schoolmanagements have resumed the normal class work. The class work should be resumed, but not risking the lives of children. |
