Gulmarg with minus 0.8 colder then Leh, fresh WD approaching | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 29: A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) from Arabian sea is approaching Jammu and Kashmir, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg with minus 0.8 minimum temperature was colder than Leh in Ladakh region. A Met department spokesman said a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea will enter the region from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The WD is likely to touch the region on November 3, he said. Chilly winds coupled with intermittent rain during the past 24 hours has resulted in severe cold during the day when the maximum temperature was below normal in the Kashmir valley, where the civil secretariat, seat of the government will close here on October 31 to reopen in winter capital on November 10. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded coldest night of the season so far after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 0.8 degree following fresh snowfall on upper heights, including Affarwat and Khilanmarg recently. However, it was a notch above normal, Met spokesman said. Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir was second coldest as the night temperature was recorded at 2.2 degree after 4.4 mm rainfall and snow on upper reaches. However, the minimum temperature was being considered normal at the health resort. Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir, Kokernag and Kupwara also witnessed above normal minimum temperature. However, the day remained cold due to rain and snow on upper reaches recently. Sun was playing again hide and seek in the summer capital, Srinagar, where 3mm rainfall was recorded and icy cold winds continued resulting in drop in the maximum temperature. However, the night temperature recorded at 7.2 degree was three notches above normal. Leh in Ladakh region, where the lowest minimum temperature of minus 3 degree was recorded October 18, witnessed some improvement and settled at minus 0.5 degree. The border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh road was 0.2 degree, Met spokesman said. |
