Jammu, Oct 29: Stressing the need for inculcating the values adhered and professed by the father of Nation, Mahatama Gandhi, the Chairperson National Human Rights Commission & former Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan today said these will greatly help in ensuring human rights across the globe. Speaking at the two days National Seminar on "Satyagraha, Self Discipline and Gandhi: A Discussion" organised by the Law School, University of Jammu in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission, Justice Balakrishnan said that Mahatama Gandhi was himself subjected to racial discrimination in South Africa which amounted to grave human rights violation at that point of time. Justice Balakrishnan said that the civilized society has to honour the human rights of all segments of society and work towards ending any sort of violation or discrimination. He also called for making the conditions of various segments of society conducive so that they live as honored, dignified and useful citizens of the nation. Earlier, Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Dean, Faculty of Law and Director, The law School welcomed the guests In his presidential address, Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu said that human rights assume immense significance in situations like strife and disturbed conditions. He said that it becomes really important to have due regard for human rights and the sensitivities of the people. He said, it is therefore necessaary that while maintaining reasonable balance in dealing with the situation, human right violations don't get trampled. Dr Sudershan Iyengar, Vice Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad delivered the Key-note address at the Seminar. He called upon the student community to identify the violations and why the rights are violated. Dr J.S. Kochar, Joint Secretary, NHRC also shared his views on the topic of the seminar and in his address he emphasised the need to sensitise students regarding human rights and urged students to get inspiration from Gandhi's principals and his ideas. Dr S K Shukla, Assistant Director, NHRC gave introduction of the seminar." Satyagraha, Aatma Anushasan and Gandhi ji" and spoke over the basic ideas of the seminar. Dr Seema Rohmetra, Organising Secretary, presented the formal vote of thanks and also conducted the proceedings of the event. Meanwhile two technical sessions were held at Brig Rajinder Singh Auditorium and Department of Environmental Sciences. Dr Sudershan Iyenger, Vice Chancellor Gujrat Vidyapeeth chaired the main technical session while Madam Manimala Director Darshan Smriti and Gandhi Samiti presented a paper on "public sphere of young India and harijan an and social concerns." Prof Gurjeet Singh ,Professor Department of Law , GNDU presented a paper on " contemporary relevance of Gandhi with regard to human rights, Dr Rajeev Ranjan. Giri presented a paper on " Satyagraha and the question of. Human Rights" Earlier Anjusha, a students of Law School sang a song 'Vashnav Vijay'. Among other present include Prof Pankaj K Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare, Prof Posh Charak, Dean Research Studies, Prof V D Singh, Director DDE, Prof Dileep Singh, President JUTA, faculty members of various teaching departments, staff, students and scholars. |
