Clear dues or we stop catering service: Contractors
No food for patients in GMC&H from Nov 3

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 29: The patients admitted in Government Medical College &Hospital (GMC&H) and its Associated Hospitals could soon be deprived of the free food facility during their stay in the hospitals as the contractors engaged for providing the diet have given a final notice to GMC&H administration to clear their dues by November 3 failing which they would stop catering service.
According to sources, the contractors running the canteens in GMC&H, SMGS Hospital, Super Specialty Hospital (SSH), Chest Diseases (CD) Hospital and Psychiatry Hospital are demanding to release pending amount of more than Rs 1.75 crore in lieu of the diet provided to the patients admitted in these hospitals.
"The GMC&H and Associated Hospitals have to pay more than Rs 1.90 crore to the contractors.
The pending bills are piling up and couldn't be cleared due to lack of funds for the purpose.
If contractors stopped the service as threatened by them then as many as 1200 patients could not get the free meals thrice a day which they are entitled to presently," said sources.
Sources further said that the crisis situation has arisen due to the dilly-dallying tactics of Government and the hospital administrations as when contractors served a similar notice of stalling the service by October 15 last, the Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-din
Intervened and assured the payments will be released in due course of time; but no headway was made in this regard till date.
"Such inept handling of the situation has now forced the contractors to stop the services as they are facing huge financial crisis and they are left with no other choice but to lock the hospital kitchens," said sources.
If sources are to be believed then GMC&H has to pay maximum amount to the tune of about Rs 70 lakh, SMGS Hospital comes next with debts amounting to Rs 68 lakh while CD Hospital has to clear pending bills amounting Rs 32 lakh, Psychiatry Hospital has liabilities as much as Rs 11 lakh and SSH has to pay an amount of Rs 9 lakh.
While the payments are pending for more than seven months in GMC&H, SMGS Hospital and Psychiatry Hospital while the period of non-payments for CD Hospital stands more than a year.
"Though Hospital administration is claiming to arrange funds to clear the pendency, it is quite unlikely that the same could be arranged by November 3 as the Darbar is closing at Srinagar on October 31 and will reopen only on November 10 in Jammu," said sources.
"The worst sufferer in the event of suspension of catering services will be patients who get quality breakfast, lunch and dinner with paying single penny…. The facility is like a blessing in disguise for about 1200 patients," they added.
