Land grabbers eye Sonamarg, authorities in slumber | | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Oct 29: In what could be termed as the irresponsibility of the government, the opportunists have resorted to the land grabbing in the world famous health resort of Sonamarg. The government land is fast falling in the hands of the people who have the vested interests. The flood which recently struck the Kashmir valley has begun to show its side effects as the opportunists have not only grabbed the government land but have also raised constructions on it and all these activities seem unstoppable since nobody is accountable these days. Imtiyaz Ahmad, a resident of Ganderbal said while talking to the Early Times,"In Sonamarg, one of the beautiful health resorts of the Kashmir valley, the hotel owners have created a havoc since they have taken in hand the illegal constructions of the hotels and the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has maintained a criminal silence over the issue, much to the annoyance of the people,".Imtiyaz went on saying that on visiting Sonamarg he was shocked to see that the opportunists have illegally grabbed the wetlands and the embankments of the rivers and the streams. As per Imtiyaz, these lapses on part of the government become the reasons for the natural calamities like the one which struck the valley last month. The people of the Ganderbal district say that the owners of the hotels took full advantage of the flood and started the illegal construction of the buildings in a big way making a mockery of the laws. "Around Gardkol area in Sonamarg opportunists have grabbed many hectares of land. On this grabbed land these opportunists first constructed the sheds of iron sheets and when there was no stopping to it, they constructed the bigger buildings, intentionally the hotels," said Shabir Ahmad another man from Ganderbal who was talked to by the Early Times. Locals say that they informed the Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority many times about the illegal constructions and asked him to take steps to stop this illegal construction. But this officer, as these locals say, seems to be least bothered about that and does not take it as his duty to save Sonamarg from being from being ruined and devastated. Locals further say that if these illegal activities aren't checked immediately then the day is not far away when the picturesque Sonamarg will be turned into a residential colony. |
