BJP faces candidate crisis
in Kashmir, new
entrants refuse to contest
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 29: The "over ambitious" Mission 44 plus of the Bharatiya Janta Party in Jammu and Kashmir is all set to turn into a "flop show" as the party is finding it difficult to locate the candidates at least in Kashmir region for the forthcoming Assembly polls slated to begin next month.
Sources told Early Times that the new entrants who have joined the party are "refusing to contest" the polls as they fear that they may face a "humiliating defeat" as barring a few none of them are that popular among the masses in Kashmir.
"Among the new entrants Dr Hina Bhat daughter of the former Congress leader Mohammad Shafi Bhat is keen to contest from Amira Kadal constituency in Srinagar," sources said, adding, "However, a few BJP leaders are of the opinion that the BJP should field a Sikh candidate from the constituency."
Ruling National Conference and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have already fielded Nasir Aslam Wani and Altaf Bukhari respectively from Amira Kadal.
A few BJP leaders, according to the sources, believe that fielding a Sikh candidate from Amira Kadal can help the party's cause as maximum members of the Sikh community stay in Amira Kadal area. "Final decision about whom would BJP field from Amira Kadal would be taken shortly," sources added.
A politician ridiculed the announcement of the senior BJP leader Avinash Rai Khanna, who is also the in charge of the party's JK affairs that BJP would field candidates from all the 87 constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir. "It seems Khanna is unaware about the ground realities and is building castles in the air. The BJP has no problem in the Jammu region but as far as Kashmir is concerned party has no base in the region," he claimed.
Sources said that BJP leaders in Kashmir are trying their best to motivate a few rebels from the National Conference to join the party so that they could be given the mandate but the rebels, sources said, have assured them if they are able to win any seats they would join the hands with BJP after the polls are over.
An insider said that there is possibility of lakhs of rupees being transacted in the coming days to motivate the people to join BJP and contest the forthcoming elections on the party ticket. "There are a few like minded people who want to keep NC, Congress and PDP at bay but no one is ready to join BJP directly," the insider added.
Sources said that party high command has asked the Kashmir based BJP leaders to ensure that the party is able to bag some seats in the Valley so that it can add to the numbers in the Jammu region.
A few leaders from Kashmir have suggested that Centre should expedite the process of releasing a financial package in the favour of flood victims in Kashmir and the entire operation should be directly handled by the New Delhi. "People have lost faith in the ruling National Conference and Congress regime. If the BJP Government at the Centre acts fast and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hands over the relief cheques directly to the victims it can turn the tables on the Kashmir based parties," sources added.
An analyst while talking To Early Times said that in Jammu region BJP is all set to bag maximum number of the seats and it would emerge as single largest party there. "As far as Kashmir is concerned the chances of the party are bleak. If party has to win some seats in Kashmir it has to think about an out of box solution," he added. Asked about party's Mission 44 plus he said, "It is Mission Impossible. The BJP leadership should realize that Kashmir is different from Maharashtra and Haryana."
