JAMMU, Oct 30: True to her name's literal meaning, Inspector Shakti Devi of J&K Police, who won the International Female Police Peacekeeper Award-2014, is a genuine epitome of 'power' and 'dynamism' as she overcame the adversities of life with grit and determination. Despite hailing from a remote village Bharnara in Tehsil Majalta of District Udhampur in Jammu region and having a humble background, Shakti Devi's 'never give up' attitude kept her dream of wearing 'khaki' afloat and her resolve finally become a reality when she got selected in J&K Police as Sub-Inspector in 1999.
"Joining Police Department was Shakti Didi's dream which she nurtured right from her school days….Her mission to be a part of police force got realized when she was selected as Sub Inspector in J&K Police," Shakti's younger brother Rajesh Sharma, who is Sarpanch of Panchayat Bharnara, told Early Times.
But, before joining police force and later on serving as a part of UN Peace Assistance Missions-first in Timor-Leste in 2012 and then in Afghanistan since 2013, it has been a journey full of trials and tribulations for Shakti, who not only had to face monetary constraints but untimely deaths of her mother, Pushpa Devi, and father, Bansi Lal, when she had barely attained the ages of 13 and 26 years respectively.
However, the unfortunate incidents in family besides lack of financial resources didn't deter Shakti's spirits as she kept on moving and pursued higher education from Jammu.
After completing her studies, Shakti-third of the six siblings, joined J&K Police but not before giving her much needed attention to the family and ably protecting her other four sisters and a brother after her mother expired.
"Despite putting up in a rented accommodation in Jammu while pursuing her higher studies, Didi never failed to come back home every Saturday...She used to collect firewood and even graze the cattle when in home. She is a source of inspiration for all of us. Her affection and love for the family has grown more over the years," said Rajesh.
"It was a moment of pride and joy for all in the family when we came to know that Didi has been selected for UN Award. What could a brother ask for more? My sister has really made me proud with her internationally acclaimed achievement…The only regret is that our parents could not witness their daughter's feat," he added.
The life's agonies continue with Shakti as her father passed away two years after she joined the Police Department but the loss of head of the family made her more resolute.
Though adversities were in abundance for Shakti but her dedication to her professional as well as family commitments bore fruits when she was offered a deputation to the UN Peace Mission in Timor-Leste in 2012 which she accepted hands down due to her uncanny knack of taking up the challenges.
Shakti, who has an experience of 15 years in the Police Department, is working with the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan since 2013, wherein she has contributed to improving the status of the women police and has effectively helped the Afghan Police move towards achieving their goals by fully adopting the democratic principles of policing.
The prestigious award by the UN's Police Division was delivered to Shakti during the International Association of Women Police Conference at Winnipeg in Canada earlier this month. It is a competitive award given to an outstanding female police peacekeeper serving in a UN peace operation. She has been honoured for her exceptional achievements in leading the establishment of Women Police Councils in several parts of strife-torn Afghanistan. When asked that how family reacted when she was deputed to Afghanistan, Rajesh said that initially they were against her decision to go there but her will finally prevailed. "The entire family was opposed to her deputation to the UN Peace Mission as we all worried that she would be in danger in trouble-torn Afghanistan but she didn't relent and her decision to join the mission could not be changed," said Rajesh. "Hale and hearty, Didi has now spent almost one and a half years in Afghanistan…This must be because of the blessings of Mata Vaishno Deviji in whom she has unflinching faith…Didi always keeps a picture of the holy deity with her wherever she goes," he maintained.
