Under pressure, BJP kick starts poll campaign without candidates | Party leaders visit Srinagar areas, face uncomfortable questions | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 30: Amid pressure from the party high command to strive for the Mission 44 plus in Jammu and Kashmir the Bharatiya Janta Party kick started its poll campaign in Srinagar today. A few BJP leaders were seen moving in the city and meeting people today. They were seen telling people that they should vote for the party in the forthcoming assembly elections to end the "Family Raaj" in Jammu and Kashmir. "If BJP comes into power it would ensure Srinagar is turned into a model city and the people who have suffered huge losses due to floods are given enough support to restart their normal lives," the BJP leaders assured people. The BJP leaders, according to the sources, are under tremendous pressure to work on the ground and motivate people to vote for the party. "The party is trying it's best to finalize those candidates, at least in the Srinagar city, who have footing and do enjoy some support among the masses," sources said, adding, "The party high command has told the Kashmir based leaders not to wait for the list of candidates and hit the ground without any delay." Sources said that BJP leaders have been told to visit the flood affected areas and assure the people that Centre would provide them all the possible help. "Make the rehabilitation of flood victims and development as the election planks and approach the people. Don't worry about who would contest from where," the party high command is understood to have told the BJP leaders. Sources said that soon after the directions from the high command a few BJP leaders left their cozy office chambers and hit the field. At a few places they were embarrassed as people didn't recognize them. They had to introduce themselves and then explain the agenda of their party. "People at many places told the BJP leaders that when floods submerged the city on September 7 this year politicians irrespective of their party affiliations deserted them. We have no faith in the politicians and the political parties," they said. The BJP leaders, according to the sources, faced volley of questions from the people and when the people asked them who all are their candidates from eight constituencies from Srinagar the leaders assured them that the list of candidates would be out soon. If sources are to be believed the Kashmir based leaders of the BJP are of the opinion that turning the tide in party's favour in Kashmir is a difficult task. "We need star campaigners whom people know and could repose their faith on. First of all we don't know who would contest from where. Secondly we don't have any agenda and last but not the least we don't have strategy," the BJP leaders are understood to have conveyed it to their top bosses. A few of them have suggested that before kicking off the full fledged election campaign in Kashmir the party should nominate its Chief Ministerial candidate so that they can seek the votes on somebody's name. |
