Omar accepts defeat by surrendering Ganderbal | To contest from Beerwah, Sonawar | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 31: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has accepted defeat even before the elections by dropping from the Ganderbal constituency. Not only that, he decided to contest from two constituencies -Beerwah and Sonawar- a sure sign of nervousness. Omar had decided to debunk Ganderbal about six-month ago. He had been to his constituency and was completely not connected. The locals had complained about it and there was huge resentment brewing up. Sources said even intelligence reports suggested it and he was forced to take the `painful;' decision. However, he did not make it official. He will be probably the first sitting chief minister of the State who is contesting from the two constituencies. In the democratic history of the country, many even sitting PMs have contested from the two constituencies. But, they didn't dump the constituency represented by them. Omar has probably made a history in parliamentary democracy of the State by not being confidant of his constituency. Omar has though by this given a bit tough moment for the PDP. The PDP was confidant of snatching away this seat from Omar. But now party feels that a bit of competition may come in its way. Sources said Omar was in the process of the leaving the State for altogether. It was then decided to get a 'secure' seat for him. The initial seat was Sonawar as in Devsar the Congress is on a strong wicket. But he insisted on contesting it from there. It was when the party decided to give him two seats he agreed to contest elections. "Omar was always on a sticky wicket. He had lost elections in the past and a defeat here would have sealed his political career. But by choosing two seats he had already put him in the loser bracket," said a senior NC leader. |
