KUPWARA, Oct 31: The Gujjar and Bakerwal (nomads) community of Karnah area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir accused the coalition government of ignoring the far flung areas, which continue to suffer in absence of basic amenities of life. According to sources the tall claims of prosperity and development seem only limited to the official documents and areas like Karnah, still struggle for the basic necessities like electricity, roads, health and communication.
Sadullha Khatana of Karnah said that our thesil is about 76 kilometers far from district headquarter of Kupwara. People of the area were left in darkness due to corruption and inefficiency of government, as they have added to the miseries of common masses in the far-flung areas like Karnah.
It remains cut off for almost three months in a year from rest of the state, due to avalanches at the Sadhna Pass. The population of this tehsil is above 63,000. Most of the governmental offices and main market of the tehsil are at Tangdar village, Khatana said.
He said only army has built some roads, from Tangdhar to Teetwal and Tangdhar to Amrohi where as other areas were left on the mercy of God.
Shahnaz Gujjar who is doing some business of walnuts in Kupwara says that unfortunately the benefits of centrally-sponsored schemes like Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Youjna (PMGSY) are not being extended to the people of this far flung area, mainly due to the strict norms provided by the central ministry.
He alleges that, "The health institutions, including the government hospital at Chamkote, are without the requisite staff while the college established in 2006 continues to function in few rooms and there is a lack of accommodation.
"People have been deprived of the communication facilities.
The land-line telephony is almost defunct while the government has not permitted the mobile phone services in the area for some unknown reasons, Gujjar added.
Early Times have learnt from the sources that this small tehsil suffered the most in the earthquake of October 8, 2005 in which more than 120 people were killed.
He said that despite having huge tourism potential, the government is yet to include Karnah on the tourist map, sources said.
However the sources maintained that,"The Cross Line of Control (LoC) Travel from Teetwal has been reduced to a symbolic gesture only denying benefit not only to the intending visitors but even the local populace of an area, which could have seen an economic boost if the same spot was used for Cross LoC Trade.
The irony is in the 21st century many villages like Nichian, Kandi Tangdar, Dildar, Chamkote, and Khaworpara and many more adjoining villages are without basic facilities will the people of area like Karnah remains still in darkness. Even though when India is highly developing towards information and technology, and is set to step on Mars.
