Let Modi make health care affordable for common people
11/1/2014 12:54:27 AM

When Prime Minister,Narendra
Modi,said,at a conference,that a time
is approaching and India could boast of having specialists, specialists for right leg, specialist for left leg or specialists for right arm and specialists for the left arm,he was not totally wrong.Out of 50,000 MBBS doctors more than 30,000 opt for higher studies to emerge as specialists in various fields. The result there is shortage of general physician.According to experts the Indian need general physicians to address their health problems but the country has more specialists than basic MBBS doctors.
For a country which produces an average of 50,000 MBBS doctors each year, a majority 30,000 opt for speciality or super-speciality courses. compared to other countries, India had more number of specialists and the 398 medical colleges in India produce specialists in fields, which do not exist anywhere elsewhere.India has a very good network system of health care but the functioning of that network is not very strong. For posts in primary health care centres, even specialists apply as it is a government job, which is bad for both the patient and doctor. There are a large number of problems which can be addressed by a basic doctor or even less than a basic doctor.
In a study on major illnesses faced by men in India, it was found that diarrhea was the most common ailment which can be easily treated by any general practitioner. But in India, very few MBBS doctors go on to be general practitioners.Possibly these very specialists adopt dubious ways for fleecing patients. It is not only the doctors but the owners and administrators of private hospitals, nursing homes and other clinics who have converted their institutions into money minting enterprises. In fact these super-speciality hospitals and nursing homes are out of bounds for the common and poor people because they cannot bear the expenses that too when some of the private hospitals have rooms which are better than three-star hotel rooms. Can a common man pay Rs.5,000 to Rs.7000 as room rent per day in a big hospitals ? Certainly not.And Modi rightly said that one "Vaid Raj"(Ayurvedic or Unani medical practitioner) would keep diseases away from the village he worked nd now even the specialists fail to treat patients suffering from various ailments. And when the study report indicates that diarrhea is a common problem for men in India it is the result of supply of unhygienic water.Majority of people in India have to consumer impure water which leads to multiple health problems. Increase in health problems, increase in ailments and diseases calls for proper treatment. But health care is neither available to common and poor people nor majority of people can afford to get treatment from specialists in private hospitals and nursing homes. The problem arises the moment a patient enters into a hospital or a nursing home.Even for minor ailment he or she has to undergo MRI,scan and a number of blood tests.Still the doctors want to be sure of the problem and hence suggest to the patient to under ultrasound and even endoscopy.By the time the patient is free from all these tests he or she has already spent more than Rs.50,000.This is followed by the ordeal of placing the patient in the ICU where per day charges range between Rs.3000 and Rs.7000.Despite the fact that the private hospital or the nursing homes have requisite number of specialists number of specialists, working in other hospitals, are on the call. They too are summoned for seeking their advice and for spending five minutes in front of the patient they charge any thing between Rs.1,000 and Rs.5000.The BJP led NDA Government will do great service to the people of India if it adopts a procedure under which medical aid and health care become affordable and available even to the common people.Let the Government set up a committee of experts which could lay down dos and don'ts for the doctors thereby preventing them from fleecing patients in the name of diagnostic tests, clinical tests.Let the doctors and the hospital managers keep the premises neat and clean so that there is no need of introducing ICU culture. Let rest of the country emulate Jammu and Kashmir where the health care, diagnostic and clinical laboratory tests are cheaper than in other states in India. Also, the Government led by Modi should initiate measures for reducing price level of medicines and life saving drugs failing which people will be forced to spend major part of their income on medicines and medical treatment.
