Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 9: Even after 3-months, Jammu and Kashmir Police have failed to trace one Umar Gul, who had threatened this newspaper of dire consequences, if it doesn't stop reporting against Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani. The accused had used choicest of invectives to intimidate the Early Times management and its staff. Police had taken the cognizance of the matter but failed to crack the case for the reasons best known to it.
The threat is still looming large but Police have maintained a silence over the issue which has forced us to break our silence and inform our esteemed readers that despite receiving life threats and no support from the administration we are steadfast on our resolve to expose all the anti-national elements and those who are a threat to our country.
Pertinently, in August this year Early Times received an e-mail from an ID [email protected]' the email read as: "Ur 3rd rate paper which seems nd infact reflects ur imaturity need nt to bark like dogs in Kashmir. u shud know da facts, Geelani sahab is only representative of Kashmir nd u need nt to find proof of it, as there are ample of it. u can only distract ur self nt odrs.or dis cud b ur strategy to enhance ur market colections bt one thng u shd know is DONT ANGRY US."
The e-mail didn't stop Early Times from reporting the truth and exposing the anti-national elements, nor did it stop the newspaper from writing against the separatists who have been preaching secessionism and violence in the Valley to fill their own coffers.
Soon after this newspaper received the threatening e-mail the management filed a formal complaint with senior police officers, including IGP- Jammu Rajesh Kumar, who later forwarded it to SOG (Special Operation Group) of police to examine the email and lay hands on the accused.
The email was sent to the ET on August 21, 2014 at 11.14 pm by some Umar Gul, threatening ET management of dire consequences if the newspaper did not stop writing against Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
The SOG expressed its inability to lay hands on the email sender, saying it had come from a foreign-based network. The investigation was, however are in progress. Till date no headway has been made to trace the culprit nor does anyone know the status of the investigation.
On the contrary just a few days before carjackers stole the car of a former NC Minister SS Slathia from outside his residence here. Entire police force swung into action and recovered the stolen car within one hours. The car lifter was arrested and put behind the bars. It seems that police force in Jammu and Kashmir acts only under political pressure rest they seem least bothered about what the common people face and undergo.
Early Times since its inception has always stood by the truth and threats have neither deterred the resolve of the management nor the staff. Even after receiving the e-mail this newspaper has left no stone unturned to expose the "misdeeds" of the people who are a threat to national interest of the country.
However, failure of the police force to work out a case against Umar Gul for threatening the fourth estate for reporting facts shows its "lackadaisical approach" towards the security of the common people. The men in uniform need to realize that they cannot just sit over the files and close the cases without putting in much effort to reach out to the culprits. So what the culprit is in some foreign country? It's the duty of the police to identify him so that he gets exposed. Simply saying that e-mail was received from a foreign network is no answer.
If Police can trace the stolen vehicle of a sitting NC MLA and the former minister within 1 hours why can't it trace the person who sent a threatening e-mail even after 3 months?
