MENDHAR, Nov 17: Ahead of the state polls, a major bid by 10 to 12 militants to infiltrate into the Indian territory was foiled by alert army jawans Sunday night when the Pak troops resorted to heavy shelling and violated ceasefire thrice in about 10 hours.
Alert army troops at 8412 post picked up the movement of 10 to 12 militants close to the Line of Control (LoC) on Pak side in Sabzian area of Mandi sub-sector of Poonch at about 10.30 pm. When the jawans challenged them, they opened fire. They were joined by the Pak troops who were positioned at their NCPP post, official sources said.
India retaliated but the militants managed to flee back unhurt. The exchange of fire between the two sides continued up to 12.40 am, the sources added.
Sources said Pakistan was desperate to push militants into J&K to create trouble here ahead of the state polls. The troops were, however, on high alert to foil any intrusion bid by the militants, the sources added.
Sources said it was at about 2 am when Pakistan again resorted to gunfire and heavy shelling in the area, targeting forward Indian posts and villages.
The fire had come from the Pak 649 Mujahid Regiment, the sources added, saying the exchange of shells and gunfire between the two sides continued up to 3 am.
Though the guns fell silent in Sabzian area after 3 am, the enemy troops again opened the mouth of their guns at about 8.20 am, this time targeting RoshniNullah post
On November 14 last, the troops one AK rifle, its three magazines and 260 rounds, one pistol and one 5 kg IED from a nullah at Sanjiot, Mendhar. The weapons were to be used by militants to create trouble during assembly polls, sources said.
