Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 20: The flood-hit have said that the relief and rehabilitation work in the summer capital was going on slowly. They alleged that the government's first priority was elections. "We are fed up as officials only visit the spot when requested or hassled. Most of the families these days are living under makeshift tents or with their relatives. More than two months have elapsed but the government seems least bothered to rehabilitate the people whose houses suffered destruction," Jan Mohammad a resident of Kursoo Rajbagh told Early Times. He accused the authorities of befooling people under the grab of what he termed 'so-called rehabilitation' saying "they have confined their responsibilities to election duties only. People who were once living affluent life are nowadays beseeching for support. Officials who have been assigned for assessment of losses to damaged houses acts as goons as they think that they have to pay form their own pockets''. Sondri an elderly women from Bemina Boat Colony, said that she along with her four unattached daughters is living in her shattered house. "I apprised the concerned Pathwari about my plight on many occasions but my pleas always fallen flat on deaf ears. I have been given Rs 1500 to repair my house, now I want to ask a question to this government, can I repair my house with peanuts that you have given me as a compensation," questioned Sondri. She said that she sold all her belongings after the death of his husband and erected a single storey house at Bemina and worked day night to sustain her family which includes four unmarried daughters. "I am old and illiterate too but I heard that the Modi government announced Rs 1,000 crore relief for flood victims. But where has the amount gone," she said. Abdul Ahad a cobbler from same locality claimed that his family is living under an open sky since two months as the authorities despite repeated applications turned a blind eye. "I am a cobbler by profession bearing burden of eight family members, my single storey house at Boat Colony Bemina got completely damaged by the floods however no officer bothered to visit my house for help," said Ahad and broke down. Shafiq Ahmad Mir of Jawahar Nagar claimed that the elections hampered the rehabilitation process severely as the entire government machinery is busy with elections here. |
