Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 20: Outgoing Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) working president Omar Abdullah, who is fighting the toughest ever election of his political career, is trying his level best to divert the people's attention away from the real issues facing the people, as also from his own utter failure to deliver on any front. So much so, the issueless Omar Abdullah is doing all that he could to create doubts in the minds of Kashmiri Muslims about the PDP leaders, especially Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti. He is leveling charges against them which are not tenable and justifiable and he is doing so hoping that he could fetch some votes and help his outfit survive the PDP's political onslaught.
On Thursday, Omar Abdullah leveled two wild charges against the PDP while addressing election rallies in the Sonawar Assembly constituency from where he is seeking election. He charged the Mufti with eroding Article 370 and accused the PDP leadership of dropping self-rule slogan at the behest of intelligence agencies.
"There was a time, as early as two years back, when there wasn't a single public speech or a press statement from PDP where 'Self Rule' didn't find a mention. PDP's politics used to revolve singularly around their slogan of 'self rule'. The party leaders even went on tours around the State holding seminars on its 'Self Rule' document and talking about vague, impractical and half-baked concepts that had absolutely no logical ground. This whole drama was enacted by PDP at the behest of covert political forces and now the drama has been abandoned with equal enthusiasm again on the orders of these secret agencies," Omar said. "Serious efforts are being made to launch a political conquest into the State and to alter its ethos, special status and to abrogate Article 370. The biggest tragedy is that in PDP these covert agencies have always found an ever-willing Trojan Horse that has infiltrated into the fortress of our State with an aim to weaken us internally. In their eagerness and excitement to appease certain quarters and to please its political handlers, PDP has with great contempt abandoned its own flagship political vision document and thrown it into a dustbin…However there are clear indications that PDP has a goal of facilitating abrogation of Article 370. This is not surprising, given it was Mufti Muhammad Sayeed who played a key role in eroding Article 370 from 1953 to 1975 during his tenure in the Congress Party in the State." Omar also said.
Omar Abdullah cannot fool the Kashmiri people by indulging in the kind of politics he is indulging for vote-bank politics. The reason is that he cannot prove that New Delhi imposed any central law on the state without the consent of the state government. The NC autonomittee report clearly says that all the central laws were introduced in the state with the concurrence of or on the request of the state government. Besides, Mufti Sayeed was not in power during the period when many beneficial central laws were introduced in the state. Mufti ruled the state only from November 2, 2002 to November 2, 2005 and during this period not a single central was introduced. The people of Kashmir are not politically so naïve that they do not know who did what. They know that Sheikh Abdullah and his son Farooq Abdullah themselves allowed New Delhi to extend nearly 20 central laws between 1975 and January 1990. The fact is that Omar Abdullah is further annoying the Kashmiri electorate by taking recourse to the politics of falsehood.
As for his charge that the Muftis are flirting with Indian intelligence agencies or they have dropped the self-rule slogan at the behest of intelligence agencies to please New Delhi, less said the better. Suffice to say that the PDP's manifesto is not yet out and that it would augur well for the people of the state if the PDP concentrates only on issues of governance and development. Omar Abdullah would do well to refashion his election strategy and not indulge in rabble-rousing and politics of falsehood. The best thing for him to do would be to stop talking about the divisive internal autonomy and seek mandate on positive slogans. He should also remember that Mufti Sayeed only a day before attacked the BJP from right and left and declared that the PDP will not allow it to dilute the state's separate status.
