| Let Govt seal Ashrams of fake godmen | | |
India has remained a land of
saints,godmen,fakirs and prominent
spiritualists.These sages and seers have contributed to India's rich traditions and culture. In various cases these very saints and sages have been instrumental in promoting communal amity because most of these seers believed in human brotherhood and were not swayed by caste or religious divide.However,this very land of seers and sufis has come under a threat from those godmen who have been blamed for various crimes.One has had bitter experiences with godmen like Asaram,Chandraswami and scores of other lesser known self-proclaimed godmen.Various cases have been slapped against all of them.What is interesting is the way these so called godmen have established their Ashrams at various places in the country and each Ashram is like a fortress with tall walls encircling the sprawling premises where the godmen and their immediate followers have been blamed for committing various crimes.Despite the fact that police have filed several cases and even a sant like Asaram had to spend time in jail people are not ready to lose faith in these "holy" men despite their known and unknown unholy acts.And the tussle between the Haryana Government and Sant Rampal in a Barwala village in Hisar has added new dimensions to the acts of misdeeds of the so called godmen.
A case related to Sant Rampal's involvement in cases of murder or attempt to murder has been pending in a court.Despite court notice to Rampal for appearance has not been responded favourably the godman with the result the court had to issue a non-bailable warrant against him.As the news reached the Ashram,which is almost a fortress, the Sant and his followers held hostage over 20,000 people,most of them women and children,when they came to know that the police party had arrived to arrest Rampal.The police exercise failed and the court's observation against Haryana Government and the police put the police on the alert.For a number of days the followers of the godman fought pitched battle with the police.At one stage the police had to retreat when they were attacked by stones,petrol bombs and even gun fire which had confirmed reports that Sant Rampal had piled up weapons,ammunition,petrol bombs and acid .Not only this he had raised even a company of private commandos who managed to prevent the police from stroing the Ashram.It was on Wednesday that a case of sedition against Rampal was filed under section 121 (A),122 and 123 which means that Rampal designed to wage a war against the Government and against the police.Ultimately Rampal was arrested on Wednesday late evening after 15 days' struggle.
The result of keeping several thousand people as hostages was the four bodies of were found in Ashram of godman Rampal.In addition to this four kids,who had taken ill within the ashram,succumbed to their illness in the hospital.That people were held hostages was confirmed by a number of people who had walked out of the ashram on Wednesday after being holed up for several days. Despite the fact that the Government had snapped supply of water and electricity not a single soul felt the pinch of water and electricity shortage because the Ashram had developed its own system and had already stored huge quantities of foodgrain.If the police reports are any guide about 15,000 people came out of the Ashram on Wednesday and 10000 were still inside the fortress of Rampal,an engineer turned godman. Several question are being raised by people. If Rampal was a godman what was the need for him to raise a private company of commandos ? If Rampal was a saint what was the need for storing weapons,ammunition,acid,petrol bombs inside the Ashram ? If his conscience was clear and had not committed any crime why was he evading personal appearance in the court ?All these issues and the cases filed against other godmen do call for upgrading the intelligence network inside and outside all the Ashrams in India so that the godmen were not allowed to commit various offences and crimes.It is time people learn a lesson or wo from godmen of the type of Asaram or Rampal or Chandraswami and stop visting these Ashrams.What is unfortunate is the way politicians have patronized these godmen and heads of each political party should instruct his or her party colleagues to avoid patronizing these godmen.
The only service these godmen render to the society is to promote fanaticism and superstition and nothing more.Let the Government seal all these Ashrams which have become dens for crime. |
