Fire forces shut down in Uri-II power project

BARAMULLA, Nov 20: A major fire broke out in the Uri-II power project in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Thursday, no one has been reported injured in the fire which broke out in Uri-II power project early morning. Fire tenders from Uri and Baramulla district headquarter were pressed into service to put out the blaze," a senior official from Uri power project said.
Talking to Early Times over the phone from Uri official said that there were no reports of anyone getting hurt in the incident.
An official of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) which operates the 240 Megawatt power project said all the employees were safe.
"The apparent cause of the fire is malfunction of a transformer.
However, what went wrong exactly can be said only after the fire is put out and only after the investigations will be carried out," he said.Local resident of SalamabadNazir Ahmad Khan said that, "the smoke was billowing from the underground power project and attempts by personnel of the fire and emergency services department to enter the premises have not succeeded so far.
"The reason behind the fire may have been a short circuit, as the tunnel is very long and there was no chance to go inside, local said.Deputy Superintendent of Police (SDPO) Uri KameshwariPuri told early times that almost twelve people were trapped and have been rescued.
"Fire engulfed the project at around 7 am in the morning, however fire has was controlled. Fire tenders from Baramulla and other places were pressed into service and other men are also on the job, SDPO said.
Almost ten to twelve people were trapped inside the Uri-II Power Project and they have been rescued and there is no loss of life, police official added.
Meanwhile it is pertinent to mention here that On July 4, 2014 India's Prime Minister NarendraModi has dedicated to the nation the 240 MW URI II hydropower project The project is on the Jhelum River near Salamabad village of Uri Tehsil in Baramulla district in north Kashmir, about 18 km upstream from the LOC.
