Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov20; Even as the mercury dips below freezing point during nights in Kashmir valley, the election fever goes up with the supporters of political parties clashing at various places. Fresh clashes broke out between the workers of the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Forum (PDF) in Khan Sahib constituency of Central Kashmir's Budgam District today. Though the workers of two political parties had a spate with each other on Wednesday when the candidates filed their nomination papers, however, the tension gripped many areas of the Khan Sahib constituency today when supporters of political parties indulged in stone pelting and charged sloganeering. Earlier, supporters of opposition PDP and NC clashed in Kulgam district in South Kashmir leaving many workers from either side injured. Clashes between supporters of rival political parties were always anticipated during elections before 1989. However, with the inception of militancy in 1990, the clashes between the supporters of political parties were replaced by deadly attacks on them by the militants. After 1990, workers of all political parties would keep secret their identity and even vote very secretly. This is after a gap of around 24 years that the workers of political parties clash openly with each other. The election fever in rural Kashmir has reached new heights as the leaders of various political parties in fray are busy in rallying and at many places the supporters of rival political parties indulge in spate with each other. However, what is even more interesting is that the NC workers are fighting the elections on a very low moral ground and bearing a few segments in central and North Kashmir, the workers of ruling NC seem to be demoralized by the non-performance of Omar Abdullah government. So for clashes have erupted only in the assembly segments currently represented by individuals like Hakeem Mohammad Yasin and M Y Tarigami. PDF Chairman, Hakeem Mohammad Yasin, popularly known as Khan Sahib, forged an alliance to form People United Front (PUF) in September last year in a bid to put up a 'Third Front'. Apparently in this elections, the 'Third Front' will play a decisive role. Senior PDP leader Muzaffer Hussain Baigh rightly said on Wednesday that the real fight in Kashmir valley is between the smaller groups and his party. The state elections are scheduled to begin from November 25 and will conclude on December 20, it will be conducted in five phases. Counting of votes will take place on December 23.
