Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 20: Under the nose of Gandhi Nagar division of Power Development Department (PDD), power theft has been going on for the past many years and officers from linemen to Assistant Executive Engineers have been making fortunes. Nearly one thousand Juggis have been set up at different locations in Trikuta Nagar locality out of which nearly half of them have taken legal connections from PDD, while rest have been using hooks by paying Rs. 150 to 200 per Juggi per month to linemen. When the team of Early Times visited various localities of Trikuta Nagar, the team found nearly five hundred kiosks have come up in different wards of Trikuta Nagar and have been forced by PDD department to pilferage power, as officials of PDD are getting regular hafta and have been making fortunes, siphoning state exchequer. "Even we had asked the officials for legal connections but the officials have been asking us to paying Rs 150 to 200 and there is no need for any connection. They have assured us that there will be no raid or inspection by them", locals claimed. Even the vendors selling sugarcane juice were found openly using hooks from transmission lines. The vendors have been using motor pumps for extraction of juice but linemen have deliberately turned a blind eye. Ashok Kumar, who has been residing in Railway colony for the last 20 years, said that linemen had not asked them for connection and they have been paying monthly rent to linemen without getting any receipt. "Linemen had started taking Rs 10 per month a decade ago, now they take Rs.150 to Rs. 200 per month per Juggis. The lineman comes every month and we pay him some money and he allows us to use hooks", a vendor in Trikuta Nagar said. An PDD official said that transmission and distribution losses have been surging for the last many years but due to nexus of linemen and other lower rung officers, Assistant Executive Engineers, the increasing losses have refused to decline. "It is a part of big nexus in Gandhi Nagar division, where such pilferages have been going on but no action has been taken deliberately", he said When contacted Executive Engineer of Gandhi Nagar ArvindChhabbra said: "If anyone is found involved in these illegal activities he would be taken to task. |
