Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 21: Omar Abdullah may have failed on all the fronts during his six year rule but he has the distinction of being the first in the Sheikh family to complete his maiden term in office.
Sher-e-Kashmir became the emergency administrator in 1947 and Prime Minister in 1948. However, he was removed from office by New Delhi on August 9, 1953 and jailed. He was accused of hatching a `conspiracy' against `unity and integrity of India'.
He had to wait for 22 years to rule the state again. However, this time he was cut to size by Indira Gandhi. The roaring lion returned to power as Chief Minister of the state with Congress support. He could not complete this term as well and the third term was cut short by his death.
Sher-e-Kashmir's son, Dr Farooq Abdullah assumed office of the Chief Minister immediately after the death of his father. Dr Farooq was dismissed by the newly appointed Governor Jagmohan on July 2, 1984 when his MLAs supported his brother-in-law, Ghulam Mohammad Shah. Shah was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the state. Dr Farooq challenged the move in the State High Court. However, the petition was not allowed.
The Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was not happy with Farooq's flirtation with the opposition leaders from various parts of India. Security men from parts of India were flown to Srinagar to maintain law and order. The entire city was put under curfew. The down town remained under curfew for more than a month.
The move caused cracks in the Sheikh Family as Khalida Abdullah Shah founded the Awami National Conference. The bitterness remains to this day.
Farooq’s second term which he won by rigging the 1987 elections came to an abrupt end on July 18, 1990 when Jagmohan was appointed as Governor for the second term to restore `law and order'. Dr Farooq, however, completed his third term starting 1996.
Omar Abdullah proved lucky than his grandfather and father. Despite hard times, he found staunch supporters in Sonia Ji, Rahul Ji and P Chidambarum, the then Home Minister. Omar thus created history by becoming the first Abdullah to complete the maiden term in office.
