Pak not in favour of Islamabad-Delhi talks | | |
Is Pakistan interested in reopening the channels of dialogue with India ? Well if the latest statement of Pakistan Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif,is any indication Islamabad is not in favour of a sustained dialogue with New Delhi for settling various bilateral problems, including the Kashmir issue. If New Delhi called off proposed Foreign Secretary level talks in August last it did so in protest against Pakistan High Commissioner,Abdul Basit's talks with Kashmir separatists days before the talks between the two Foreign Secretaries were to begin in Islamabad. In view of stand taken by New Delhi on Basit-Hurriyat leaders' talks what Nawaz Sharif has said has already enraged New Delhi. Nawaz Sharif has said that his Government wanted to hold talks with Kashmiri separbatists before it held talks with Government of India. He has stated that Islamabad holds that it is its fundamental belief that the Kashmir issue should be resolved through dialogue. Imagine the height of his arrogance or ignorance when he blamed India for having cancelled Foreign Secretary level talks. And he has reiterated his stand on holding talks first with Kashmir separatists before opening the channels of dialogue with India. Well in the light of Nawaz Sharif 's this stand will New Delhi agree on resuming the process of dialogue with Islamabad ? Possibilities seem to be bleak because if New Delhi resumed talks with Islamabad without ensuring change in Pakistan's attitude it would amount to surrender. And the BJP led NDA Government cannot afford to yield to any pressure from Islamabad or from Nawaz Sharif that too when Sharif has started blaming India for having cancelled the proposed talks between the two Foreign Secretaries. Sharif has not stopped there he has blamed New Delhi for violating ceasefire agreement on the border by targeting several posts, pickets and villages in Pakistan by the Indian troops. It is bad politics because Pakistani troops and the Rangers have repeatedly violated ceasefire agreement which led to killing of several civilians and a few security personnel.Had not Pakistani troops resorted to ceasefire violations there should have been no need for over 5,000 people in Indian border villages to shift to safer places. The way scores of houses and shops on this side of the border were hit by gun and mortar fire bears testimony to ceasefire violations being committed by Pakistani troops. New Delhi has rightly been irritated by Nawaz Sharif's allegations in which he said that the Indian troops violated ceasefire and later blamed Pakistani forces was part of New Delhi's plan to cover up its wrong doings in Kashmir.Another issue that Nawaz Sharif touched and caused irritation to New Delhi was his categorical denial of harbouring militants in Pakistan. If one scans properly the latest statement of Nawaz Sharif one may have no doubt about the real intentions of Pakistan.Well the latest views of Sharif on the entire issue is a departure from his earlier stand and indications are that he may have come under pressure from the Army.Following the protest rallies held by opposition leader, Imran Khan and Dr Qadri the Army has tightened its grip on the civilian Government headed by Nawaz Sharif. Finding that Narendra Modi has succeeded in building bridges with leaders and Governments in various countries, especially, US, Japan,Germany, Australia,China and other developed countries Islamabad plans to trigger violence on the Indo-Pak border that could weaken Modi and prevent him from cementing ties with developed nations. |
