Namdhari XI beats J&K Police to lift hockey trophy | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 23: The formidable Namdhari XI today defeated state's top side of Jammu and Kashmir Police 2-1 to clinch the 2nd Sant Gurbaksh Singh (Danna) Memorial Hockey Tournament, organised by Sarab Sangat under the aegis of Hockey J&K at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. The match was so competitive that it remained goalless in the first 50 minutes of the play. All the three goals came in the last 10 minutes with Namdharis scoring back to back goals in the 49th and 51st minute. Namdhari's broke the silence of the selected spectators when Gagandeep Singh successfully converted a penalty corner into goal in the 49th minute. It was followed by a brilliant goal in the 51st minute by Bishan Singh, who displayed exceptional skills inside the striking area beating the goal-keeper. The J&K Police salvaged some pride when they managed a last minute goal on a penalty corner awarded in their favour. Jaspreet Singh netted the ball to reduce the margin. For his superb game, Ravi of Namdhari XI named man of the match. Emerging player award, consisting of Rs 1100 each, given away to Charanjeet Singh and Gaganjeet Singh. The local club, Guru Nanak Nagar Club declared best team of the tournament. Veteran hockey player and promoter of the game, Harmaman Singh was presented with lifetime achievement award by the organising committee. Minister for Sports, Raman Bhalla was chief guest in the final. In view of his pre-engagements in the electioneering, Minister left the match half way extending his good wishes to the teams. The prizes were given away by Inspector General of J&K Police, J P Singh. While the winners, Namdhari XI given away title trophy and cash prize worth Rs 31,000, runners-up, J&K Police presented with Rs 21,000 prize money. |
