NC on the importance of 2014 Assembly polls | Echoing separatists | | Neha
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 23: Fearing defeat, the Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah has virtually jumped on to the separatists' bandwagon and said the Kashmir issue must be resolved as per the wishes and aspirations of the people of the state. Omar Abdullah made this outrageous statement at election rallies at Sumbal and Kangan near Srinagar and added that the people of Jammu & Kashmir are the "primary stakeholders of their political destiny and any possible solution would have to respect their dignity and sentiments". His rabble-rousing is not going to help him, as he has already sealed the fate of his party by his irresponsible political conduct, reckless actions and by mishandling the situation that developed in the Valley in the wake of the devastating September floods. What Omar Abdullah said regarding the political future of the state at election rallies in Kashmir could be described as a desperate attempt of a frustrated and failed leader to woo the Kashmiri voters and he is likely to make more and more outrageous statements to strike a chord with the estranged Kashmiri people. Such is the level of his frustration and desperation. It appears the growing popularity of the PDP in the Valley has upset him and his applecart. The Election Commission must have taken note of the activities of Omar Abdullah. After all, he has tried to arouse passions in the Valley for votes. Interestingly, Omar Abdullah also spoke about the importance of the 2014 assembly elections and urged separatists not to press for poll boycott. Terming the 2014 assembly elections as very crucial, he told the audience that "an election boycott this time around would have far-reaching, irreversible and detrimental consequences not only on Article 370 or our special status but also our political stature and voice as a people" and said "I hope and pray that people come out and vote in large numbers in these elections and reinforce their defence of their political aspirations and the interests of J&K". In other words, he used the opportunity to appeal to the separatists to reconsider their poll boycott call. Significantly, the Kashmiri separatists this time are also not enforcing their boycott calls. In fact, Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday in a statement said that it was for the people to participate or not participate in the elections and poll boycott will be against "Kashmiri Muslims". It is for the first time in years that the NC has seriously urged the separatists not to press for poll boycott. Hitherto, the NC always welcomed the poll boycott calls without saying anything on record because a low poll in the Valley, especially in Srinagar district and its surrounding areas. The low polls always helped the NC win seats in the Srinagar district and its adjoining urban and sub-urban areas, but things have changed in the Valley over the past few years, especially after 2010. He has now come to believe that a low poll would improve the poll prospects of the non-NC parties like the PDP and the BJP. In any case, one thing was quite evident from what he said: The NC ship is sinking and sinking fast. There cannot be any other meaning of what he said at the election rallies. |
