Ganderbal votes against Omar, BJP invisible on ground | Who is BJP candidate, ask voters | | Early Times Report GANDERBAL, Nov 25: As huge number of voters flocked polling booths in this central Kashmir constituency today to exercise their franchise, the resentment against the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was eminent and much hyped BJP wave was missing. People even didn't know the name of the BJP candidate contesting from Ganderbal. Most people regretted that they had voted for Omar in 2008 assembly elections. The voters who had queued up were talking among themselves that Omar couldn't do much for the constituency and his promises proved to be a hoax. The Chief Minister remaining inaccessible and not paying much heed towards the development of Ganderbal were the major issues that voters were seen discussing before exercising their franchise. They were confused whether to vote for the local NC candidate Ishfaq Jabbar or the former PDP minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal. People were regretting that Omar did not contest from Ganderbal this time. "Had Omar contested from Ganderbal we would have taught him a lesson," said a group of youth. They said that National Conference has once again tried to hoodwink them by giving mandate to a local candidate (Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar). The young people had come to polling booths with only one intention to ensure that NC doesn't retain Ganderbal seat again. "We will vote for anyone but not for NC," the youth said. They were of the opinion that days of Abdullahs are over and they cannot mislead the people anymore. "There is no doubt about the fact that our elders have been the diehard supporters of the Abdullah family but in return they have not got anything," the youth said. One thing was eminent the NC candidate Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar may have to pay for the deeds of his boss (Omar Abdullah) as people were out to punish NC. Surprisingly, the much hyped BJP wave was no where visible in this constituency as people even didn't know the name of the BJP candidate. "We have heard a lot about Prime Minister Narendra Modi but we don't even know who is contesting on the BJP ticket here," locals said. An old BJP worker, Sheikh Rashid who had joined the BJP in 1996 and contested assembly elections from Ganderbal in 2002 unsuccessfully till the recent past used to look after the party affairs in south Kashmir. He was given mandate for Ganderbal constituency out of blues. Sheikh Rashid not getting enough time to campaign for himself was visible on the ground today. "BJP candidate couldn't organize any rallies. Only a few people know that he is contesting on the BJP ticket," said Farooq Ahmed. Locals were of the opinion that BJP has no chance of winning the Ganderbal seat as party leaders failed to strike a chord with people. "We didn't see any BJP leaders on the ground when election campaign was on," they said. On being told that BJP is aiming at 44 plus seats in Jammu and Kashmir locals said that may be they have strong base in Jammu region but in Kashmir they have failed to reach out to the masses. "BJP's politics in the state has remained confined to press notes and newspaper advertisements. They have failed to reach out to the electorate," locals added. |
