Separatists face virtual snub during first phase of assembly elections | No takers for poll boycott | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 25: In a virtual snub to the separatist leadership of Kashmir people in large numbers came out to exercise their franchise while paying no heed to the boycott call given by the separatists. There was no impact of the boycott call since brisk polling was recorded in all the constituencies of the Bandipora and Ganderbal districts located in North and Central Kashmir respectively. The voters made it clear that they cannot waste their vote as in such a situation it is quite possible that an 'inefficient' candidate gets elected to the assembly. "In the past we paid heed to the boycott call, but this time around we have decided not to repeat the mistake. An inefficient person like Mohammad Akbar Lone got elected from this constituency all due to our boycott in the previous elections. We don't want him to be re-elected as it would lead to yet another spell of darkness and under development," said a group of youth outside a polling booth in the Wangipora village of Sonawari assembly segment. Yet another group of youth belonging to the Shadipora village of Sonawari constituency said that they carried out a meeting with the local Hurriyat leaders and activists on Monday evening and made it clear to them that they are going to vote this time around. They even went to the extent of saying that the Hurriyat leaders asked them to vote for People’s Democratic Party and not National Conference or any other party. "National Conference workers have always been voting whatever the circumstances. They will vote this time as well and if we abstain then Lone will again make it to the Assembly. We don't want that to happen more so this in this age of progress and development. The boycott of the elections would mean that we would remain under developed at least for the next six years," said the youth. A group of people while casting their vote in the Nowgam area said that boycott call has always failed in their village since they cannot afford to remain away from the poll process. They said that although the successive governments have failed they still come out and exercise their right to franchise. "This village is one of the backward villages in the whole area and the basic reason is that our representative never visits us after getting elected. However, we always come out to vote that there would be change this time around and same holds true for these elections. There is no concept of election boycott call in our village," said the people of this Shia dominated village. Disapproving the call for boycott of elections a group of voters outside a polling booth in Bandipora said that they cannot afford to remain under developed at the cost of other areas. This group of voters said that the road leading to Bandipora from Srinagar is in dilapidated condition and same can be set right only when people elect a person who is capable of getting the things done. |
