People defy boycott rant, 74.21% cast vote on 6 seats of Chenab valley | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Early Times Report Kishtwar, Nov 25: A healthy voter turnout was witnessed on the six seats of Chenab valley as more than 74.21% voters exercised their franchise in first phase in Chenab valley Tuesday. As per the details available with Early Times, 51-Kishtwar witnessed 77.09% polling while 1208 (1.52%) employees had already cast their votes in advance, in 52-Inderwal constituency 75.65% which includes 648 votes cast by employees in advance, 53-Doda 79.42%, 54-Bhaderwah 69.50%, 55 -Ramban 68.78% and 56-Banihal 73.32% people cast their votes. As per the election officials, the voting percentage will increase once the ballot papers issued by the concern District Election Officers will be added to the overall tally. While talking to Early Times, voters averred that they want to elect honest and dedicated representatives. The main issues for the voters remains lack of development, worst condition of roads, lack of clean drinking water, electricity, unemployment and lack of facilities in hospitals and defunct education system. Many new voters who cast their votes for the first time said that they want better colleges and Universities and modern facilities in their towns. The unemployed youth of the region want immediate start of work on new power projects in the Chenab region having capacity to generate over 15000 MW power. Meanwhile barring minor incidents of heated arguments between representatives of various political parties, the situation remained peaceful in all parts of the Chenab valley. Several angry people while talking to "Early Times" informed that their names were deleted from voters lists. Many among them said that they have been declared as dead in voter lists and could not cast their votes. Similarly several youngster complained that their names were not included by the concern BLOs despite applying for the same on time. In certain cases the male voters were shown as female, however the issue was addressed by the polling officers on duty after proper verification. Many polling station lacked ramps, thus causing lot of inconvenience to the handicapped persons in reaching polling booths. A deaf and dumb girl namely Rafina Banoo Chera polling station of Inderwal also cast her vote, which is first of its kind. The officials on duty said that Rafina showed the sign of the candidate and with the help of a helper cast her vote. At Bhaderwah, 110 year old Bakhti Begum also cast her vote. While talking to media persons, Bakthi Begum said that she had never missed any election since 1957. In response to the separatist boycott call, the voters in Chenab valley said that the call might suit the people of valley as the Kashmir valley is well developed, while the Chenab valley is lagging behind on all fronts and hence they come out in large number to cast their votes to overcome to these problems . |
