Slap or a trap? | | | By Dr Virendra K Sahi
The enthusiasm with which the voters have come out and cast their votes in the first phase in J&K to include certain sensitive constituencies is phenomenal. That they have done it despite all the warnings, threats and election boycott declarations by the separatists' block, is daring. It can for sure be pronounced as a big victory of the democratic values nurtured in the nation for 67 years against the separatism, sectarianism and secessionist agenda that was covertly and overtly propagated for that many years or may be more since the seeds of it were sown ever since the rebellion was prompted against the rule of law in the pre independence era. Notwithstanding the last moment face saving statement by Sayed Ali Shah Geelani loosening his stand on election boycott, the euphoria, the buntings, the election campaign, public meetings were all signs of a popular public participation in franchise. It is and will prove a great booster to bolster the anti separatist stand defeating the Pakistani sponsored propaganda against formation of popular governments in J and K State and should be projected as a show case to the world over. At the same time what must not be ignored is the under current, with the BJP efforts to harness the migrant votes. The poor voting in certain terror infested constituencies would have placed BJP at a better plank, which would possibly dent the 'K' centric hegemony. Once that was in sight, all the Kashmir leadership including the self styled separatist block get on one page. This is not for the first time. We saw that at number of occasions earlier. Be it the Dogra Certificate, issue of PRC to girls married outside the state, the land to Shrine Board, de-limitation, hanging of Afzal Guru or any other such issues which could bring the J & K State closer to the national ethos and create an Indian signature of authority-all brings the separatists, the moderates, the main stream and the no stream players from Kashmir together on one page. While it may be celebrated as a 'slap' on the election boycott promoters, it may also be a collective 'trap' to scuttles the efforts on non- 'K' centric politics to grow in the State and keep the Jammu and Ladakh regions deprived and discriminated. The final polling breakdown and impact on the results will bring the cat out of the bag. It is only first phase over-coming weeks may be more revealing. |
