International day for elimination of crime against women | Govt, NGOs forget the day | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 26: At a time when Government claims that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure safety and security of women in Jammu & Kashmir , the authorities particularly the state's Social Welfare department could not even organize a state level programme to commemorate the international day for elimination of crime against women , which is celebrated on November 25th every year. Not only the Govt, the Non Govermental Organ-isations (NGO's) working on women and gender issues and other women rights groups also ignored the day. Crime against women has evoked discussions across the country as well as in J&K in the recent years. Media has been focusing on this issue due to increasing trends of crime against women from the last couple of years. As per the information available with New Delhi based National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) , reported incidents of crime against women has increased by 6.4 % in year 2012 alone. In every three minutes a crime against woman is committed across India in the shape of rape , murder , dowry death , physical assault etc . In the year 2012 more than 2.44 lakh incidents of crime against women were reported while in the year 2011, there were 2,28,650 such reported incidents. According to authentic surveys and researches 65% of Indian men believe that women should tolerate violence in order to keep the family together. Women have to undergo several types of violence and the trend continues to increase day by day , in-spite of the fact that drastic development on various fronts has taken place in our society . Not only un educated or people belong to lower income groups commit atrocities with women , but even the highly educated class of society are involved in such heinous crimes. Most common crimes committed against women across the globe is rape . The incidents of rape has increased drastically in India , Pakistan, Bangladesh and other south Asian countries from the last one decade. In our state (Jammu & Kashmir) reported incidents of rape were negligible just ten or fifteen years back , but from the last four to five years these incidents have drastically increased. In India, a woman is raped every 29 minutes. Incidents of reported rape have increased 3% from 2011 to 2012. During 2008 there were 21,467 cases of rapes reported across India and this has increased manifold just within four years and during 2011 approximately 25,000 cases of rapes were reported across various states of India. Crime and violence against women is indeed a human rights violation. This is a consequence of discrimination against women. The crime and violence against women impacts on, and impedes, progress and development in many areas. The incidents of crime against women are continuously increasing in J&K . As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) there were 3328 incidents of crime against women registered in J&K during 2012 alone which included rape , attempt to rape , thrashing by relatives , dowry death , etc . But the authorities and even NGO's seem to be hardly moved about this otherwise they would not have forgotten to commemorate the day of November 25th , which is marked as the international day for elimination of crime against our women folk. Can social welfare department justify it ? |
