Akshay Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 26: It might sound bizarre but it is true that Jammu and Kashmir, where institutions for imparting training to teachers had mushroomed abruptly, has another unique distinction as it has also a large number of untrained teachers working in various schools. According to the data furnished by Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education department and J&K Board of School Education, state has nearly 550 Elementary Teachers Training institutions (ETTs) and 142 private B.Ed colleges, which have been imparting professional training among educated youth to teach students in various schools. Sources informed that National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed Performance Indicators for Elementary School Teachers (PINDICS) for assessment of teachers' performance. According to the recent data furnished by NCERT, it has come to fore that nearly 4,50,947 teachers were untrained across country while 1,53,731 are undergoing professional training. In Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 22136 teachers have been working in schools, who are without any professional training. The number is very much higher as compared to nearby hilly state Himachal Pradesh, which has only 3374 untrained teachers. Among the list of 20 states, Jammu and Kashmir stood at No 6 with the highest number of untrained teachers. Across the country, West Bengal has highest number of untrained teachers with 190091 followed by Bihar which has 82,787 untrained teachers, Uttar Pradesh 37,565, Assam 35602 and Tripura 22768 untrained teachers. Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Sikkim and Uttrakhand are behind Jammu and Kashmir, with less number of untrained teachers working there. |
