Article 370 in J&K Assembly elections | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 27: Notwithstanding the fact that the BJP has said in so many words that development and governance, and not Article 370, are the major issues in the assembly elections, its critics have made this provision one of the major election issues. Not a single non-BJP political party is leaving any stone unturned to convince their respective constituencies that they are committed to retaining Article 370 and repeatedly asking the BJP to make its stand on this provision clear. In fact, the non-BJP parties are accusing the BJP of resorting to double-speak. The ruling NC has said in many words that it will not allow any political party to abrogate Article 370 and its election manifesto, which was released today in Srinagar by senior party leaders, has said in unambiguous language that the NC will oppose the political party which will try to repeal this Article. Omar Abdullah and other NC leaders are saying in their election rallies that the state will secede from India if this Article is abrogated. They are saying the accession of the state with India is based on Article 370. The main opposition PDP has been saying on a daily basis that Article 370 is sacrosanct and no one, not even the Parliament, can abrogate it. All the PDP leaders are one as far as their stand on this Article is concerned. Article 370 is a bridge between India and the state and the moment this Article is repealed, the state will have no political and constitutional truck with India, they have telling their constituency in Kashmir. In other words, the view of the NC and the PDP on Article 370 is the same and both are reassuring their constituencies that they would see to it that this Article is not deleted from the Indian Constitution. The Congress, the CPI-M and other "secular' parties have also made Article 370 one of their main poll planks. The leadership of these parties is saying day in and day out that Article 370 is part of the basic structure of the constitution and hence, it cannot be abrogated. Interestingly, separatists like Geelani have also been trying to convince the Kashmiri electorate that moves are afoot to abrogate Article 370 and change the Kashmir's demographic profile. Even the local media is writing story after story on Article 370 and underlining its importance. Hence, to say that Article 370 is not an issue in these elections is not a correct stand. |
