Jammu, Nov 27: Despite tall claims of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to strengthen healthcare facilities across the state in his tenure Community Health Centre (CHC) Kalakote of district Rajouri is paralyzed due to pressing shortage of doctors and paramedical staff.
Sources told Early Times that the CHC Kalakote, has sanctioned strength of eight Assistant Surgeons, a Dental Surgeon, five Specialists, eleven Nurses, and eight Pharmacists but at present only two doctors are running this institution, one of them a Block Medical Officer (BMO).
"Inspite of Operation theatre, labour room, laboratory facilities in this institution no delivery or major/ minor surgery has been conducted for months, due to paucity of doctors and even medicines" said an employee adding that nearly 13 health institutions in Kakalkot Health block are running in rented accommodations and most of them are either being run by pharmacists or by the Health Workers.
"On one hand state government claims of providing modern medical facilities at the door steps of the people of the state while the ground realties are totally different and most of the government health centers are either lacking proper infrastructure, equipments, medicines or many of them are without consultants/ Medical Officers", Mohammad Iqbal a resident of Kalakote said.
Castigating state government Iqbal said, "Being poor people of far flung area, we don't have money to visit far off health care institutions. If government is not providing facilities, such Health institutions should be closed", he said and adding that politician treated them as only their voters and during the election time, they came for votes but never did any work for welfare of masses.
Iqbal further said that CHC Kalakote has been catering to healthcare needs of the population of more than one Lakh, people.
When contacted Chief Medical Officer, Dr Rajiv Sharma accepted and said that most of the doctors have been attached to other health institution, but the truth is that CHC Kalakote has no surgeon who conduct surgery but the emergency ward of said institution has been functioning round the clock. "whole state has acute shortage of doctors', he said.
