SRINAGAR, Nov 27: Despite High Court orders to stop encroachment along the banks of River Jhelum unabated construction of buildings is going on in full swing in the Srinagar city and its adjacent areas.
Scores of illegal structures are coming up along the banks of river at KitiKhul, RamporaChatabal, SafaKadal and other areas, while the authorities have put a blind eye on the issue.
"The authorities are paying no heed towards this grave issue of encroachment; several structures have been constructed during the past 15 days here. Nobody is questioning them, this is illegal and needs to be noticed soon," said Bashir Ahmad, a local at Chattabal.
The rapid encroachment along the banks of River Jhelum is also held responsible for the recent devastating floods as over the years human intervention is said to have eroded the river embankment.
"There has been a lot of human activity on the banks of this river that has shrunken it considerably, that is the reason it could not embrace much water and resulted in the floods in our city," said a group of residents at SafaKadal
The residents held that even after being washed away by the recent flood the structures are again being reconstructed under the nose of authorities.
"People have again started constructing houses at the same places where the floods washed away them. Some are making temporary sheds even after witnessing the devastating destruction by floods," said NaseerWaza, a local at Qamarwari. Meanwhile reliable sources reveal that several people who are involved in the encroachment process enjoy political support as many of these are the political workers who are undertaking the election campaign these days.
"When an official starts enquiry, he is being called by a local MLA or any other political worker and the enquiry is stopped immediately while the encroachment process goes on," said a group of people.
Pertinently, High Court had recently passed directions after going through a notice, citing an expert committee report on how encroachments of river Jhelum and its tributaries caused the devastating flood that hit Kashmir in early September causing a huge loss of lives and property. High Court had empowered all the district magistrates to demolish the constructions that are seen coming up on the river banks right from its source in Verinag in South Kashmir to Uri in North Kashmir.
