Nothing new in NC manifesto | `Old wine in old bottles' | |
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 27: The National Conference manifesto has evoked mixed reaction in the Valley. Some have termed it `old wine in old bottles' while for others it is a just a `pack of paper'. There is nothing new in the document, said Mohammad Ashraf a research scholar from Kashmir University. According to him, the party has repeated `worn out' stuff like AFSPA, Article 370 and autonomy. "While AFSPA evokes discussions from time to time, Article 370 and restoration of autonomy are no issues in contemporary Kashmir," he said. A student from the same institution believes the people are interested in employment and development. "The Omar led coalition regime has failed on these important fronts," he said. A professor of History preferring anonymity said: "NC was never serious about autonomy. In 1975, the NC leaders did not press for it while negotiating with the Government of India. The autonomy issue was remitted to principals and till date the NC has not sought a meeting of the principals," he said He said the Farooq Abdullah regime opted for a resolution instead of a bill the overwhelming majority in the house notwithstanding. "Had he opted for a Bill, the situation would have been different today," he said. Human rights activists believe Omar never sought revocation of AFSPA. "The demand was abandoned in lieu of a full term in office," they said. The manifesto has been released belatedly to `fulfil a political formality'. The Additional General Secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal while talking to newsmen last week said manifesto was not necessary. He had given an impression that the party may not release a manifesto this time. |
