From Nepal to Arnia to Poonch
11/28/2014 10:35:53 PM

While Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, opted for a cold shoulder treatment to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during the two-day SAARC meet in Kathmandu, notwithstanding Thursday's shake-hand, Pakistani troops provided much needed assistance to groups of militants in sneaking into the Indian territory from across Arnia, Poonch and Rajouri sectors during the last 48 hours. When Nawaz Sharif landed in Kathmandu the Indian electronic news channels and print media were praising the voters in Jammu and Kashmir for setting a new post-insurgency record on polling percentage. And it was heartening for the Indian political leaders to know that constituencies like Sonawari, Bandipore, Kangan, Ganderbal and Gurez, which have otherwise been militancy infested areas years ago, witnessed over 71 per cent polling on Tuesday. And if Nawaz Sharif remained inflexible as far as his plan on cold shouldering Modi was concerned it was the result of peoples' decision in Kashmir to ignore the poll boycott call given by the separatists. And these very separatists have become pawns in the chessboard of Pakistan's gameplan vis-à-vis India on Kashmir. High poll percentage should have rattled Nawaz Sharif because he had a week ago announced that before he opened the channels of dialogue with India he would wish to have talks with Kashmiri separatists. He had stated so under the belief that these separatists were the real representatives of people in Kashmir. And Tuesday's polling percentage had established that these separatists had become a spent-up force.
And in a bid to push groups of militants into the region of Jammu, where polling is to be completed in the remaining four phases, Pakistani agencies, especially the Army, provided assistance to these guntoting youths to sneak into the region from across Arnia, Poonch and Rajouri sectors during the last 48 hours. In Arnia sector three soldiers, three civilians and four militants killed and three others were injured. Though the BSF managed to foil the infiltration bid, still combing operations were launched to nab militants,in case they had taken shelter in some bunkers or behind the tall grass or in some houses of civilians. These ingress bids were meant to escalate the level of violence which could prevent people from casting their votes.
What is amazing on the part of Pakistan is that on one hand it has not stopped using its soil for exporting terror and on the other hand it has been making strong plea for the resumption of New Delhi-Islamabad talks. Equally intriguing is the way that Islamabad has been seeking resumption of stalled dialogue process but on the other hand its troops have resorted to frequent ceasefire violations and for helping militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir for hiking the level of violence. At Kathmandu Nawaz Sharif preferred to pose as a leader who has been hurt by India when his establishment and Pakistan Army have been needling India and inflicting heavy losses. During the SAARC meet Modi wanted various agreements to be inked which could promote road connectivity, energy, health care and trade but Nawaz Sharif opposed signing of such agreements at the SAARC level. However, Modi retaliated by telling the SAARC members that one could have bilateral agreements on issues related to health care, road connectivity, energy development and trade besides investment. In support of his argument he cited the example of Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and other SAARC countries except for Pakistan with which India has already inked various agreements.
Under one such agreement Modi had given a go to Delhi-Kathmandu bus service and had opened a trauma centre in Kathmandu which had been set up with financial and technical assistance from India. Modi is the man who has eclipsed Nawaz Sharif whether in US during the UN General Assembly meet or in Nepal during the SAARC meet. Hope Pakistan learns a lesson and stops using its soil for exporting terror to India. Let Islamabad favour New Delhi's moves and desire for promoting peace in the South Asian region.
