Ganderbal residents puncture Omar's claims for development of his former home constituency | 'He never fulfilled promise of settling down in Ganderbal' | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 28: People of Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district that went to polls in the first phase on November 25 are aghast over the 'mal-treatment' meted out to them by the sitting legislator who is none other than Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. Sharing their views with Early Times a group of people of the district said that Omar failed them since he could not pursue developmental agenda as promised by him. The residents said that it would have been very difficult for the Chief Minister to retain this assembly segment. "We can accept that every constituency should develop equally, but when it comes to the constituency being represented by Chief Minister the people naturally have more expectations. But let me put it straight that Ganderbal has not seen much development ever since Omar has been elected from this constituency," said Mohammad Ayaz, a local. Imran Ahmad, a youth said that as soon as Omar became the MLA he on record promised that he would construct a house and settle down in Ganderbal. He said that during the past six years no step whatsoever was taken by CM to suggest that he is quite committed and concerned towards development of Ganderbal. "The local legislator should be available to the people of his constituency all the time but that was not the case with Omar. We can understand that he is the Chief Minister but that does not mean he would ignore the problems of people who voted for him. He owes his success to the votes of Ganderbal people and how can he ignore them," said Imran. The residents of Ganderbal district said that Omar paid handful of visits to his constituency and as such he could not understand the problems of people. They said that people who could have informed him about the difficulties of people also got sidelined and said goodbye to the party fold. "People like Ghulam Ahmad Saloora, Mohammad Yusuf Bhat and Sheikh Ghulam Rasool were locals and they could have easily projected problems of people before the Chief Minister. However, first Saloora was thrown away like a waste paper and this was followed by unceremonious exit of Yusuf and Rasool from the National Conference," said the residents. The residents said that since Omar had nothing to 'sell' before the people he thought it better not to fight elections from the Ganderbal constituency. They said Omar got the message about dissatisfaction of residents of Ganderbal during the Parliamentary elections held in May this year. Pertinently Omar's father, Dr. Farooq Abdullah lost the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha seat to Tariq Hamid Karra of People’s Democratic Party. Like most of the other assembly segments National Conference candidate lost the Ganderbal assembly segment to his PDP's candidate during the Parliamentary elections. "It would be an uphill task for Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar of National Conference to win the Ganderbal assembly seat given the anger against Omar. It would need more than a miracle for Ishfaq to emerge victorious and it seems that Qazi Mohammad Afzal would win this seat as he did in 2002," said the residents. |
