After a gap of 27 years, 2014 elections draw Salah-ud-Din's relatives to polling booth | | | Shakeel A Khan Early Times Report BUDGAM, Dec 13: Call it anti-National Conference sentiment or wave of People’s Democratic Party, even the close relatives of United Jehad Council Chairman Syed Salah-ud-Din couldn't resist the temptation this time. After a gap of about 27 years some close relatives of the UJC chief exercised their franchise. Besides casting his vote, one of his immediate relative rendered the services of a polling agent to a party from dawn to dusk and without any shyness on his face. It was the rarest of rare sight and it continues to be hot issue in the native village of the UJC chief and in the adjacent villages as well. "Election in this area is nothing new in our area as these were conducted for the three times since 1996 but what surprised us is that the people having relationship with Salah-ud-Din voted for the first time ever since militancy erupted in Kashmir. It happened despite the fact that UJC chief had himself called for a boycott of the polling," said Abdul Rashid. A close relative of UJC chief who voted (wishing anonymity) gave the other reason for having cast his vote saying that since the BJP was trying its level best to make forays into the valley with the support of his neighbour. He said that his neighbour had got the mandate from a valley based party which was pursuing the agenda of BJP. "I took it as my duty to put a check on this movement and it is the only reason which drove me out of my house this time. I don't bother what people have to say about this as I have done something which should be lauded not condemned," he said. It is pertinent to mention here that the people who till yesterday advocated the boycott in the area became the star campaigners of a political party. These people who until yesterday used all their means to enforce the strike or the boycott were seen openly carrying the banners of a political party like the 'die-hard fans' and appeared motivated even to embrace the death. "These people actually mislead the poor ones and got their dear ones killed. These people used to lead the funeral prayers of the slain people and the irony is that they are beating the drum in the election rallies of political parties," said Abdul Gani Dar, who has lost two children in the turmoil. |
