Separatists maintain criminal silence over Sarpanch's killing | Panchayat representatives soft targets for 'frustrated militants' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 13: The abduction and subsequent killing of a Sarpanch in north Kashmir's volatile Sopore town one day ahead of fourth phase of the assembly elections in Srinagar, Anantnag and Shopian districts has once again proved that Panchayat representatives are soft targets for the militants and when they (militants) fail to strike in a big way they make it a point to at least kill a Panch or a Sarpanch. Pertinently suspected militants abducted Ghulam Mohammad Mir, 62, from Tarzoo area in Sopore last night and his body was recovered from a field in Shalabugh area of Sopore town this morning. A week ago, the militants had shot dead a Sarpanch Mohammad Sultan in south Kashmir's Shopian area, while another one was shot at and injured in Pulwama. In May this year ahead of the Parliamentary polls militants created fear ahead of polls in south Kashmir by targeting Panchs and Sarpanchs but this time around due to tight security and intensified vigil militants couldn't succeed in inflicting much damage despite making desperate attempts. An analyst while talking to Early Times said: "This is senseless violence and killing innocents is no Jihad. No one can justify the cold blooded murder on the name of religion or for one's political beliefs." Taking a dig at separatists the analyst said: "Separatists, who claim to be the champions of human rights and don't miss a single opportunity to call for a shutdown if forces kill anyone, have always maintained silence over such killings as they cannot annoy their bosses sitting across the border. Someone needs to ask them what was the fault of 62-year old Sarpanch and isn't his killing a human rights violation?." Many people are of the opinion that high voter turnout in the first three phases of the ongoing assembly polls has frustrated the militants and their handlers sitting in Pakistan. "Masses reposing their faith in democratic set up and saying goodbye to boycott politics has unnerved the secessionist elements in Kashmir and their mentors sitting across the Line of Control," said an expert. He said Pakistan and militants should see the writing on the wall and leave Kashmiris alone as people are in no mood to get carried away by their hollow slogans and senseless rhetoric and violence. "There has been a pragmatic shift in people's thinking in strife torn Jammu and Kashmir and they have realized that people who are selling Azadi dreams are doing so to ensure that their shops keep on running at the cost of the innocent people and their blood," the expert added. A politician from the mainstream party described the killing of Sarpanch as barbaric and unjustified. "Some people are claiming that he (Sarpnach) was killed for taking part in the electoral process. Someone should ask the chief of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, Syed Salah-ud-Din why didn't he punish his relatives and kith and kin who thronged the polling booths in large number at Soibugh (Salah-ud-Din's native village in Budgam) to cast their votes." The politician said that people have matured during all these years and have realized that they cannot be taken for a ride anymore by the so called 'Azadi agents.'
