Mustafa Kamaal accords legitimacy to the Assembly elections | Role of agencies | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 17: NC additional general secretary and CM Omar Abdullah's uncle uncouth Mustafa Kamaal was one NC leader who never ever appreciated the role of the Indian intelligence agencies in Kashmir. He always denounced them and criticized their role. He used to express the opinion that the intelligence agencies always played dubious role during the elections and ensured the victory or defeat of certain candidates. He also used to hold the intelligence agencies responsible for the alienation of Kashmiri Muslims, as also for the defeat of the NC in the Assembly elections of 2002 and 2008. The fact of the matter is that he was a bitter critic of New Delhi and the intelligence agencies and his grouse against them used to be that they helped Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to form People's Democratic Party to weaken the NC and fracture the Kashmir polity. The other day, Mustafa Kamaal sprung a very pleasant surprise by making a very sensitive statement on the role of the intelligence agencies. Claiming that the NC would emerge as the single largest party that would form the next government in the state on its own, he said that the intelligence agencies this time round remained neutral and did not to influence the voting pattern by playing any kind of dirty role. He said that it was for the first time in 60 years that the intelligence agencies held themselves aloof from the elections and allowed a free and fair election in Kashmir. In fact, he echoed the views of the PDP, which described both the 2002 and 2008 Assembly elections as free and fair electoral exercises. The statement of Mustafa Kamal was very significant as it accorded legitimacy to the ongoing election process in the sensitive border state. It was significant all the more because the statement came from a leader of the party which, according to all political pundits and Kashmir-watchers, is destined to bite dust in the Valley and suffer massive defeats both in Jammu province and Ladakh region. There is hardly any political pundit who is prepared to give the ruling NC even 15 seats. That a party that is bound to suffer a humiliating defeat has accorded legitimacy to the 2014 assembly elections should be appreciated by one and all and vindicates all those who say that the Election Commission of India holds free and fair elections to the extent possible. |
