Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 17: Has the BJP accepted defeat even before the declaration of results? Has the BJP finally realized that it overestimated its strength when it adopted mission 44+ as its goal for the assembly elections? Has it also realized that it committed a serious blunder by taking Jammu and Ladakh for a ride and focusing its attention only on Kashmir, Kashmiriyat, the so-called Kashmiri pain and the Vajpayee's controversial "Insaniyat, Kashmiriyat and Jamhoooriyat" formulation? The answer to all these three questions seems to be in the affirmative if one reads between the lines what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday while addressing a massive election rally at MA stadium.
He, among other things, said: "All successive governments of the state have always ignored the needs of the people of this region (in this case Jammu). You are right in your perception that you have been treated step motherly by all successive governments of the state. I have also realized that your complaint is right. These parties which ruled the state for most of the years are now claiming that BJP will get no seat in the Valley. Your reply has to be that they also will not get even a single seat in Jammu region". Compare what PM Modi said on Tuesday in Jammu with what he said during his earlier election rallies starting from Kishtwar on November 23 and you will see the difference.
In the earlier rallies, PM Modi only talked about Kashmir, Kashmiri "pain", Kashmir's underdevelopment and resolution of Kashmir within the ambit of "Insaniyat, Kashmiriyat and Jamhoooriyat". He and other BJP star campaigners and party's poll managers such as Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Ram Madhav, Avinash Rai Khanna and so on took Jammu and Ladakh for granted and taunted the people of these two regions by focusing only on Kashmir. They virtually humiliated the people of these two regions in all the first four phases and showed no regard to their concerns and feelings. In fact, the BJP leaders gave the people of Jammu province and Ladakh to understand that the BJP has no place for them in its scheme of things and that for it Kashmir was its priority. The BJP top guns insulted the people of Jammu and Ladakh when they on November 12 refused to take action against Hina Bhat, who challenged the very ideology of the BJP and threatened that she would pick gun and become militant if the BJP revoked Article 370.
It was only on Tuesday that PM Modi for the first time talked about the plight of the people of Jammu province and held the successive Kashmiri-dominated and Valley-centric governments in the state responsible for the neglect of Jammu and Ladakh. Significantly, it was also for the first time that he didn't invoke Vajpayee or he didn't talk about Kashmir and the so-called Kashmiri pain. But more than that, he virtually acknowledged that the BJP would not win a single seat in Kashmir notwithstanding the fact that the BJP humiliated Jammu and Ladakh to appease Kashmir; that the people of Jammu, Kathua and Rajouri districts are the party's last hope and that only the Jammu electorate could help the BJP win a respectable number of seats.
But the BJP has missed the bus and caused an irreparable damage to itself by injuring the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Ladakh. An impression has gained ground both in Jammu and Ladakh that the BJP is no different from the Congress and other Kashmiri parties like the NC. It remains to seen if the Jammu electorate would trust the BJP and vote overwhelmingly in favour of the BJP candidates. The general view in Jammu is that the BJP is as undependable as other Kashmir-centric political parties.
