Jammu, Dec 19: Under the nose of Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB) authorities, majority of banquet halls in Kathua city have been blatantly violating the operational norms. The repeated notices issued by district authorities of PCB have made no difference to the operation of banquet halls, majority of which have also inadequate parking facilities. Source informed Early Times that except one banquet hall, established last year at national highway, most of banquet halls have been violating the pollution norms, which made establishment of treatment plant mandatory for all. "Out of total 12 banquet halls, 11 are operating for the last many years without any waste water treatment facility while majority of them have no adequate parking facility", sources said, adding that maximum have been running in violation of Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources (Regulation and Management) Act, 2010 (Water Act), which made in mandatory to discharge treated water into any water body. According to guidelines of Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB) each banquet hall must have waste water treatment plant and sewage treatment plant, to treat the waste water generated in the hall, before discharging the water into drains. A social activist wishing anonymity and alleged the PCB department of Kathua has lost its credibility with each passing day and it seemed that there was a nexus running, which has left the banquet hall operators without any penalty. He further said that causal approach or malpractices of the PCB department, the owners of several industrial units have blatantly been violating Water Resources Act but the department concerned has deliberately turned a Nelson's eye over the violations. "The silence of PCB signals towards something fishy in entire practice, which has been going on for the last many decades", he alleged. District Pollution Officer, Deepak Abrol said that after repeated notices issues to these banquet hall owners, no one has responded so the department has decided to take stern action and might order closure of the banquet halls, which have been running in violation of norms. |
