With no houses to live in miseries of flood affected people continue to mount | Central, state governments play politics over humanitarian issue | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Dec 19: With both the state and central governments playing to the galleries with respect to the rehabilitation of flood affected people things may get from bad to worse since the harshest phase of winter is all set to begin over the next few days. It is getting very difficult for the people of the flood affected to live their life normally since most of them don't have their own houses to live. While some of them are putting up in rented accommodation many others are living at the houses of their relatives. The miseries seem to be unending since winter has already set in. "My house suffered severe damages due to the flood and we are yet to recover from the shock. I had to dismantle my house since it was unsafe to live there. Had the rehabilitation process got underway earlier I might have reconstructed the house. Since this did not happen I was forced to shift to my relatives' house," said Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Karan Nagar. Aslam said that he paid more than one lakh rupees as labour charges for clearing the rubble of his dismantled house. He said the relief amount received by him has been Rs. 12,650 adding that the snail pace adopted in pursuing rehabilitation process by the concerned authorities is bound to compound problems for the flood affected people. "The ground and first floor of my house got damaged in the recent flood and as such we had to shift to the second storey. There are intense cold conditions and the entire family at times shivers with the cold. This clearly depicts the apathy of the people at helm and the people are totally helpless in such a wanting situation," said Nazir Ahmad, a resident of Ikhrajpora. People as a whole especially those affected by the flood have taken pot shots at both the state and central governments saying that both have played with the emotions and sentiments of the masses. They said that more than three and half months down the line there are scores of families who have been denied the initial relief amount. "Both the state and central governments have been playing politics over a purely humanitarian issue. It was the duty of both to chip in and help the flood affected people. They have been engaged in blame game rather than healing the wounds of people. Both should hang their heads in shame and feel ashamed," said Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Jawahar Nagar. Fayaz said that Bharatiya Janta Party government's promise that the relief amount would be directly credited to bank accounts of flood affected people has turned out to be a hoax. He said even though the affected families have shared their bank details the relief amount is yet to be received through their bank accounts. |
