Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Dec 19 : The Department of Irrigation and Flood Control has started a special drive of removing encroachments in and around water bodies in District Baramulla. So far about 2600 trees and 31 unauthorized structures have been removed from river banks in the district. The drive for removing encroachments from rivers under way in Baramulla has taken a speed as the cause is recent floods in Kashmir valley that led to death of 87 people and destruction of property around Rs one lakh crores, is encroachments along river and streams banks. Jhelum which is a main source of irrigation in the Valley has been marred by extensive siltation in last few decades as local residents had grabbed the irrigation land and the river had lost its carrying capacity and led to blockage of its lone outflow channel in Baramulla. Early times have leant that the DC Baramulla has directed removal of all plantations and encroachments on the embankments and tributaries of river Jhelum, in and around the district. This was disclosed at Ningli Nallah Sopore today where the drive was under way. It was given out that about 4 kmts length from Bangdara to Hygam of Ningli nallah has been cleaned during which the locals have given their full cooperation. It was told that the people have voluntarily came forward in cutting down the illegal plantation from river banks and Nallah, thus showing their full support in the drive. Assistant Executive Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sopore Sub-division along with a team of Officials and labourers executed the drive. It may be noted that the drive regarding the removal of encroachments from Rivers and river banks is being carried out in the district as per the Order issued by District Magistrate, Baramulla as per the directions of Honorable High Court of Jammu & Kashmir. The District Magistrate, Baramulla, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Lone has impressed upon all the executing agencies in the district to strictly adhere to the directions of the Honorable High Court in letter and spirit and bring up the removal of the encroachments (illegal plantation and unauthorized constructions) on war foot basis from the water bodies. Meanwhile it is pertinent to mention here that the Jammu and Kashmir High court had directed the entire district Magistrates across Kashmir to remove constructions in their areas along river banks. |
