Shailender Singh gets Sahitya Akademi Award for Dogri novel | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 20: Shailender Singh, has been awarded this year's prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in Dogri language for his novel 'Hashiye Par' (A Tree to Grow), the English translation of which has been published by the world renowned Oxford University Press recently. 'Hashiye Par' is the first literary creation of Shailender Singh, which was published in 2010. The story of the 161 page book revolves around the character living Below Poverty Line in India. His second book 'Sewadhani' was released in 2012. The theme of this 240 page volume is 'Child Labour', which tries to distinguish between work and exploitation along with other details. The author has keen interest in social justice and empowerment of citizens. Both the books, although on the exploited and poorest of the poor characters, do not meet a tragic end but explore progressive alternatives. The author has projected the status of social justice and economic dynamics of the underprivileged class of more than 1/3 population of the country, leading a life of abject poverty. Singh is born on 1st August 1968 in a liberal belief family in village Chhamb in India at that time, which presently in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Entire family was dislocated when he was a small kid and had to change his government schools not less than five times in the process of migrations. Major part of childhood is spent in refugee camps and tents. He pursued Science stream till Higher Secondary schooling and then joined B.E. course in Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. Subsequently he did MBA from Jammu University. He joined Jammu and Kashmir Police in 1999 and is presently serving as SSP in the State Police. Shailender Singh was given the first Prof. Ram Nath Shastri Memorial Award on the birth centenary celebration function of Padmashri Prof Ram Nath Shastri organized by Dogri Sanstha in collaboration with J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages earlier this year for his first novel 'Hashiye Par'. |
