Shafiq Mir condemns killing of sarpanch in J-K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 20 : All J-K Panchayat Conference chairman Shafiq Mir on Saturday condemned the killing of Sopore Sarpanch Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, saying this is the frustration of the terrorists sponsored by Pakistan to derail the election process in the state. "This is the frustration of the terrorists sponsored by Pakistan. On seeing the successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the terrorists got frustrated and they are selectively targeting the panchayat leaders particularly Sarpanchs and Panchs of the state, holding them responsible for making the maximum participation of the people in the ongoing election process," said Mir. "This is the third killing in the recent ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Our third sarpanch has been shot dead by the terrorists this morning in Sopore. This is very unfortunate, we have always been for the past two years demanding security for the panchayat members of the state. Neither the previous government nor the present Central Government is taking any action in this regard," he added. Mir demanded security for the panchs and sarpanchs of the state from the Central Government, and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take apt action in this regard in Jammu and Kashmir. He further praised the people of Jammu and Kashmir for voting despite the terror attacks. "This is the responsibility of the Central Government to provide security to panchayat leaders of Jammu and Kashmir. This is not the killing of Panch or Sarpanch, this is the killing of the basic pillar of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir which is most threatened in this area," he said. Earlier in the day, a village sarpanch was shot dead by suspected militants in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district. The sarpanch, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, was shot dead when polling was on for the fifth and final phase of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. In Jammu and Kashmir, the voting is taking place for 20 assembly seats in border districts of Jammu, Kathua and Rajouri. There are 213 candidates in the fray in this phase. |
